I think it's fairly safe from muggers, earthquakes, and nuclear attack
But not so sure about falls, scrapes, cactus thorns, snake bites and occasional hooligans.
In the dark or at dawn are times when I prefer to travel with company.
Later in the day you have more people, more snakes, and/or heat stroke or sunburn.
Of course it depends on the season and the weather.

I would advise always having water, your medicine if you might need it, and a phone with GPS or trail information. That way you know where you are and how to best get out or get help.
It might seem I am overplaying the danger... I'm not sure but I have spent nights alone out in the country unintentionally, and it's not fun. This is a semi-desert region.
