A more typical candle extinguisher …

… this one is a replica, in pewter and blackwood, of an original found in the wreckage of the Katherine Shearer, a 440 ton barque that exploded off Esperance in 1855 when a fire, lit be an arsonist onboard, reached the cargo of 9 tons of gunpowder. Wreckage was strewn over a 2 mile radius, including the original candle extinguisher which lay under the sea for the next 130 years.
