Today is my wife's birthday, and she requested Fish and Chips from Chef John's, in Lemon Grove. This small town east of San Diego is where I grew up, so each time we go out there I have to relive my formative years (5-15). Junior High school is probably n...  

. . . after pizza. We've got a few good fish 'n chips joints around here, too, but there's one in particular that stands out, not so much for the cuisine (although it's pretty decent) as the location. Oh, and my condiment of choice: yellow mustard. No tar... 

Fish and Chips is one of my favorite things to eat but not many places (in L.A.) do it well. That's awesome they do their own tartar and cocktail sauce. Guess I need to do a road trip to SD! Please wish 'L' a Happy Birthday for us! -MW

In the UK, one would imagine that the fish and chips available would ordinarily be to a high standard given that the country is famed for, or at least associated with, the dish. But, typically, the opposite is true, and soggy batter and limp, greasy chips... 

when I lived in the UK we ate in evey place that was recommended. Harry Ramsden was good then, and a place called Jane's in Byfleet was our favorite. Chef John outdoes them all. Mike
