I don't know how much is too much water in winter
The book says if they are in pots put them under the eaves of the house or inside. Once the leaves drop off stop watering or just mist the stems and not into the soil. In our area some varieties are dormant a few months... if I knew more, ours might still be alive, but my wife is the plant person around our property.
