I use a Tempurpedic mattress and pillow...
And have never noticed any smell. As far as sleeping, it takes a couple weeks to get used to but once you do you'll never want to go back to springs.

One possiblitiy is could the mattress have been inadvertently sprayed with some chemicals while at the warehouse? Mattress probably came sealed in a plastic bag but there could be some holes somewhere. Does the paint smell sort of smell like moth balls? -...
