I'll go and find that NPR interview!
Thank you for your comments. YES! I'm very scared to send RIMOWA luggage under the plane. Nowadays, it's just too risky. I find that the Salsa Trunk (now called Essential Trunk) (but not the Salsa Air/Essential Lite) does well in checked luggage. If I know I'm going somewhere where I'll be traveling entirely by car, I'll actually put my metal Rimowa luggage in boxes to protect them!
I still like the idea of clamshell luggage over zippers. Even though zippers don't get catastrophic misalignments that the clamshells do. Clamshells are much more secure and water resistant, zippers can be defeated with a ballpoint pen sometimes. But in practicality for checked luggage, zippers probably survive.

On rare occasions the RIMOWAs get to travel in their own boxes!
I'm likely going to be using more AWAY luggage for checked luggage in the future. The RIMOWA is nice, but there is some worry about damage in transit. If you're not transporting sensitive machinery (RIMOWA or PELICAN case job) and you're mainly transporting clothing, the AWAY works just fine! Another thing I've realized is that you shouldn't fill the luggage to the point it's overweight. It's the weight of its own contents that damages the luggage when there is a mishap and the luggage falls down a conveyor belt.
