When I was a kid, growing up, the San Diego Zoo had a hummingbird exhibit
I think that's what started me on liking them, because we could actually go into this room about 50 feet by 12 feet, filled with water, plants and hummingbirds flying around. (picture from a web search)
I also once rescued a hummingbird from my cat Tiger. He had "gummed" the bird so it had no punctures. It laid in my hand for 10 minutes, then woke up and flew off.

After that I have really tried to take care of them (just search on hummingbirds on this site).
