Very different from serpent and dragon. These two were always single individua on the dials, and impressed by the richness of details and colours in themselves. The horses are a pair, so the main effect lies in the contrasting colours and the impression of strength, muscles and movement, placed in front of a deliberately dramatic sky.
You remember that we suspected the horses dial would try to be intercultural somehow, combining hte Asian/Chinese zodiacal symbolism with the affection of the West for horses. We were wrong, but not entirely. Apparently, the artists did not have Europe in mind, but the Arabian world, where horses are also valued highly. However, from its cultural roots, the perception of horses is not very different between Europe and the Arabian world, especially when compared to the difference between European/Western and Asian/Chinese symbolis.
