I have an SS reverso duo that I also put on a light brown strap on occasion. I think the Arabic numerals, blued steel hands and the guilloche make it easier to dress down. But with the VC 82172g, despite the white gold in principle being easier to match with other strap colors, the design feels so formidably formal and modern in white gold, I worry that a brown gator strap might look out of place. Maybe a dark navy strap with gray stitching could work, but that's an expensive risk to take.
On the other hand, I've seen 5196g on a honey brown strap and I think it looked fine.
