testing for water-resistance

Joseph, you bring up a good point about the reality of water-resistance ratings.  The problem is that the general water-resistance tests conducted under ISO standard 2281 are done in static water and virtually meaningless as swimming or any other motions underwater multiply the pressure on the watch case tremendously.  Thankfully, they have created a seperate standard for watches intended for diving purposes under ISO 6425.  This testing is significantly more stringent and involves every watch so rated, not just a represenative sample as required by ISO 2281.  The Overseas, at 15 ATM, falls into the recreational category suitable for non-professional swimming, surfing and other water sports.  If one is serious about wearing a watch for vigorous or sustained water activities, they should seek out a timepiece with ISO 6425 certification.

VC website describes their water-resistance numbers thusly:

• 3 bar (approx. 30 metres)
By way of indication: suitable for normal daily use, standard activities on the surface of the water (such as short swims or bathing). No diving.

• 15 bar (approx. 150 metres)
By way of indication: suitable for swimming under water, scuba diving. By way of indication: suitable for swimming under water, scuba diving. Not a diver’s watch according to the ISO 6425 international norm.

The concept of water resistance
At Vacheron Constantin, the indication of water resistance is given in bars, based on the ISO 2281 international norm. Nonetheless, in order to meet the stringent quality demands of Vacheron Constantin watch products, the Manufacture uses testing methods that surpass the prescribed applications.

As a matter of principle, it is important to be aware that fluctuations in temperature and external factors such as the action of solvents, cosmetics or dust, as well as hard impacts and sudden movements, may all have an adverse effect on water resistance.

Since the water resistance of a watch is not guaranteed to last indefinitely – because the water-resistance systems and gaskets are in particular subject to wear and ageing – we recommend that you have the water-tightness of your watch tested at least once a year by an authorised Vacheron Constantin retailer.
