Funny you should reference Chas Chandler, Art...

The bassists are always forgotten, right? Why funny? Well, it's longish and boring story, but you've got time. ;-)

At the moment, pplater Minor 2/5 is resident in the far North, where there is not much in the way of 'cultcha' and, for that matter, not much in the way of human contact. So his dutiful father has been trying to keep him sane by fishing out the odd great clip from which he might learn something about the history of music.  It's the ensemble pieces that offer so much from the historical perspective; you know, things like Stevie Ray Vaughan playing with Bonnie Raitt, k.d. lang singing with Roy Orbison and this week's example: the clip of various guitar legends jamming with George Harrison's kid Dhani on 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps', ending with a masterclass from The Arist-Once-Known-As -Prince-Then-Known-As-An-Unintelligible-Symbol-So-He-Became-AKA-The-Artist-Formerly-Known-As-Prince-But-Then-Known-As-Prince-Again-For-A-While-Before-He-Died-Too:

ANYWAY: one thing led to another, and of course pplater Minor 2/5 had to be shown the Clapton/Collins 'Layla' from Live Aid and of course that led to some Blues Brothers to capture some of the better work of Donald 'Duck' Dunn, who had been laying down the bass for Clapton/Collins at Live Aid. (What is it about alliterative names for bassists???). That in its turn led to an exploration of his oeuvre and,OMG!  When you have nothing better to do with a few hours of your life, check out his discography!  The Booker T years were but a minuscule part of his work. But you knew that, because you're Dr No.

And where do you go after that? Depends on your age, of course, but if you take away those frets, hit some harmonics and drop some bad acid, the only option is Jaco:

But this is a mere sideways glance through the looking glass, Art, because this exploration could go on For. Evah. It deserves its own sticky thread over on Time Out maybe. Just So.Much. Great.Music - so little time.

Ah, time: today's watch -

Cheers,
