Team, đ
When having seen the upcoming WS theme, I thought about
which stories might qualify for a submission and I basically came up with
two; stories that are connected with the arrival respective watch acquisition,
quite some time ago, in fact dating back to 2011 & 2012.
For the first one, itâs in regard to a Jaeger Valjoux 72 Chronometer, a watch I had been
lucky to find on the occasion of a visit to a good friend in Paris; during that stretch
of just 3 days of my visit I had been furtheron lucky to find and pickâup 3 more,
thus 4 watches (sic !) total.
â These are included below, all from Jaeger LeCoultre or Jaeger, my main
collecting field just as the Jaegerâ Chronograph in question here.
It had been a hilarious afternoon and a last evening in also very good mood and having fun.
The getâtogether lasted well into the evening and the round of PuristS were exchanging
experiences and a lot of laughter. We were showing samples of our respective ticâtacs,
which we had brought with us, either in the metal or as pictures..
â We enjoyed relaxed drinks, whereby the evening culminated with several (!) rounds of a
delicious Framboise, which we all indulged in; in fact, I came back to my hotel pretty late,
and still decided to pack my handâluggage to be ready for takeâoff rather early next day.
Unfortunately and to my distress, during a last check the next morning, I found only 3 of
the 4 watches, although I carefully searched my carryâon, yet a bit pressed for time already.
â As time was progressing, I had soon to leave for the airport. All that was left to me,
was to ask my dear friend (who also had witnessed my purchases and the likely loss before)
to inquire with the horlogerâ store, and in the Cafe & restaurant where we had spent our
afternoon and the last evening, if that watch maybe had been found forgotten somewhere..
In fact, I had felt pretty bad and disappointed, that our search had remained futile, and especially
the little âMonsieurâ, (the smallish (34mm) Chronograph) did remain unfound, and my
good friend, who had been instrumental in finding that cute Chronograph, remained
feeling sorry for my loss.
The final end of the story, occurred when being home again and had unpacked, it surprisingly
turned out that beetween the textile inner layers of the Trolley, there was it !!
â my lovely Jaeger Chronograph, which had returned to my hands in the end again !
â My good friend was happy for me as well, and just remarked with a little smile â
Well, maybe next time to rather stay with a bit less alcohol, and maybe switch to
Mirabelles instead of Framboise.â..
But alltogether: all turns well, that ends well, and I still always have to smile
when I take this watch, as one, which didnât want to get lost.. đđ

This second story I want to share is more the story and background for a very special
watch, I had found on another occasion in that very same City and which I fell
for at very first sight !!
It was my first Breguet watch, a Type XX Chronographe âRetour en voleâ (or Fly Back),
whereby I had been looking for a Vintage Chrono, for quite some time already.
On a neighbourhoodâstroll near my hotel I had visited my horlogerâ store, a well
sorted watch maker âand shop.
â And there it was, a beautiful (Civilian) Type XX Chrono, with an amazing dial and not only that:
It turned out that it was a complete set of a watch, manufactured in 1976 and delivered
to Breguet/Chaumet in Paris in 1978; in addition there were the original Chaumet cardboard box
and even the original Breguet shopping bag and papers for the watch of course.
â but the very special additional element consisted of a small gift card within the box, with
an original photo of a historical doubleâdecker aeroplane. â Not all yet, as here comes the catch:
an inscription on that card, reading: âTo mon grand frere Jaquesâ, dated Dec 25th, 1978
which documented the watch as a gift from one brother to his elder, senior brother !
â One feels touched by that watchâ pedigree element of more than 40 years, which
closes the loop from manufacturing, story of its sales and finally, its dedication
as a Xmas gift from one brother to another. â I felt overwhelmed and still am
by this full set and by the story of this watch and up to this date it is one
of my dearest finds of all my Vintage watches.
â The complete set, the quality of it, the dial, the Breguet hands and the
2 subâcounters of the Chronograph do it all for me, up to this very date.
I had been asked several times whether I would be inclined to sell this watch
at a good price, but I never did consider it at all and I guess, never will.
