Up/Down for me.
From pictures and specs, I always preferred the original. After actually handling both and comparing side by side, I prefer the more modern dial and the better dimensions of the up/down.

I have quite a big wrist and the original Dt does not sit properly on it. Though, I like the original dial layout more.
The 2012 version, because I dislike eaten numbers on the second scale. Also i like the indices instead of t roman numbers.
But to get the real feel i have to see them. Just to get the proportions. 39 mm is fine to me, that is a great pro of the 1999 model.
very tough one...
both are top cool pieces... when I have tried them I have liked the way the modern version sits on my wrist a marginally better. sits lower and less top heavy... pure aesthetics I favor the original... both are great however.
Now if I had to choose and vote with my own wallet I might have to go with the original as it is generally a bit more affordable and I would likely be equally happy wearing either... so for a forced vote I would go the first version!

Just because this post is gonna drive the price up for the Mark I and I want one 😂 jokes aside, I can’t find fault with the Mark II Datograph. They are both stunning in their own right. Original is favored because it is the one that started it all...and it was perfect to begin with. But I still feel the second iteration was executed beautifully. I therefore vote for both
There is no comparison. The original 1999 under Mr. Günter Blümlein.
Mr. Blümlein was a true watch lover and understood how to make watches. He was a true business leader and not a press man. Unlike his successors...
He just got everything right ... Lange 1, 1815, Datograph...
It's sad they dont make the 39mm anymore!
Original for me, roman numerals and a smaller dial just compose the watch better imo
plus I genuinely dislike the case enlarging trend going on in the industry

I have the original and prefer it. I forgot it has Roman numerals. Never thought about it. I like the balance of the dial more and size.
Up/Dn
Of course the original is a classic but mainly for the movement. For me it was too small, I don’t like Roman numerals on a chrono, Lange is known for the gothic numerals, and the power reserve was pretty short. When the Up/Dn came out in 2012 I knew it would be my first Lange. Larger case, Up/Dn power reserve, 60 hours, baton hour markers, and oh that same stunning movement!
Newer for me.
As much as I love the original but I always believe in buying the best and most technically advanced version of something and let it age with you. Plus to me, having a a power reserve indicator is very important as I find it the most useful complication in any manual watch.
obviously, you can't go wrong with eithet and whoever is picking between both is in a very lucky and blessed position.
New for me please
I much prefer, and own, the new version. The larger size suits me better for my wrist but I also find the power reserve both handy and visually appealing whilst I find the original dial to look a little too cluttered with the Roman numeral’s crammed into the smaller dial.
Very interesting to see both pictured together in that way, thank you. Also interesting to see how different folk view things. I do think though that, if someone owns either watch, then their vote should count double! 😉

Despite generally preferring larger case sizes, I much prefer the dato in 39mm
