A. Lange & Söhne

Want to take the leap and get a perpetual calender, but am struggling between the lange and the patek 5140. One concern i have with the lange is the possible difficulty in reading the dial - was looking at my friend's watch and thought that the font and overall dial was difficult to read (and i don't have any eye problems). Am i just being too nit-picky here or do others have the same problem? And any other considerations in deciding which to choose - the lange or the patek? Thanks very much in advance for all opinions...

I love the layout of the dial of the Patek but the Lange has a second hand... Each indication can be advanced individually with the Lange... the Patek has a more "delicate" design and is thinner than the Lange... each watch is of course a masterpiece and I would like to face such choice like you.

Also like the embossed moon, which is much easier to see.  And I like the big date.  And I like the movement, especially the Lange rotor.  I also think the Lange is overall easier to read what you really want the see, normally - the time and date.  And I like that it has a second hand.  And an AM/PM indicator.

5140 was difficult to read,especially when the date got into the 20's.

But at the same time, I have to say that I found the dials on the L&S a bit to small, especially the leap year indicator.

Saying all of that, in hindsight I would probably now choice the L&S.

on Lange perpetual are luminous hands and markers which IMHO are out of context with a classic watch. Don't get me wrong, I like the use of luminous in a Rolex, Panerai or BP FF but NOT Lange or Breguet!

Decision day is this friday - I agree they are quite different as far as perpetuals go, but both do share some characteristics - stylish, clean, classical design, excellent movements... I'm a humungous fan of both houses. Been visiting both ADs trying the watches on regularly (and driving both ADs nuts), the only things that sort of bug me with the L&S dial are the "Perpetual calender" inside the monthly dial and the luminous hands. The patek seems a little simpler (cleaner) in that sense, but perhaps a bit too "delicate".

Anyway, thanks very much, and please continue to add thoughts if any. Been following this forum with great interest and have always found it very informative.

I got it. Langematik Perpetual platinum model, got it a day early, decided to pull the trigger as I made up my mind. It's a cool little thing, very happy with it, I keep on looking at it. I think if I had gotten the rose gold model the luminous hands would bother me more, but with the white metal, it looks more... natural. Thanks everyone for your thoughts on this.

It's a fine watch. I have the same model that you purchased -- have had it for years -- and never tire of it. I didn't reply to your original post, but I greatly prefer the Lange aesthetic to the Patek look. I hope you enjoy it for many years!
