To celebrate the the first world championship title, in 1973.
A special blue, some stickers, the GT Chassis, more supple than the S, 300 HP and some special details such as a full Alcantara interior, and... A Red Carbon roof!
Cherry on the cake, a video:
The price is huge ( 89 000 euros ) but the outcome is quite cool, I must say.
I would well see this " base " to make some mandatory improvements: Titanium exhausts, bigger and lighter brakes, a more efficient suspension, dynamic admission, a lithium battery and lighter rims. It would be a BOMB, for approximatively the price of a R.
You will also learn a lot in the process which is very gratifying (or frustrating at time). My previous ride was quite extensively modified, this time I'm sticking to stock as long as I can (but the temptation is real, I need to stay strong!).
The Corvette is very good. I haven't driven it yet, but the specs show excellent double wishbone suspension, mid engine, 6.2 liter V8 engine, nearly 500 hp, mid engined, and even a dry sump lubrication system! Fully equipped comes in around $88,000 USD plus taxes (on the road around $97,000 USD). Only flaw is that it's heavy, at nearly 1700 kg, could lose 100-200 kg.
It is 100-200kg overweight. But I have a feeling it's a great car! Corvettes were always interesting cars, but the generation I test drove back in 2005 or so, I didn't like, the steering ratio wasn't right, the weight of the steering wasn't right, the brakes were just so so (Corvette was still using sliding calipers on a performance car - my 1.8L 4 door C-Class Mercedes Sedan had fixed Brembo front brakes). But wow, this one would really look like it'd potentially be my kind of car! A little heavy - I like the cars to be right around 1500 kg or less. But very nice indeed.
The Z06 version will have a smaller engine (5.5L vs 6.2) but will have much more horsepower, around 670 vs 495! It will be a high revving very emotional engine. It will also be possible to specify the car with carbon fiber wheels! Saving about 5 kg per corner! 20KG total! Imagine all that reduced inertia! Hmm... Lamborghini Huracan Technical $270,000 USD or Corvette Z06 $150,000 USD? Hmm... Both super emotional. I've driven the earlier Lamborghini Huracan and what a machine. Almost perfect. Steering could be a little sharper. Visibility and storage space is severely compromised in the Lamborghini. Weight is good on the Lamborghini. And a super emotional car. Haven't driven the Corvette - but I have a good feeling I'd probably like it.
It’s a real shame America loses out on cars like this. An Alpine, Lotus Elise and 987 would be perfect for some of the less well known backroads in America.
