I too was first concerned about this potential issue, but in practice I've found no - zero - difficulty, even under a quick glance scenario. I believe context plays a part of course - we have a vague sense of real time, with a few exceptions - but equally the watch just reads exceptionally legibly. A joy on all fronts!

Of course with perfect rear-view vision this is an easier piece to love, but in all honesty my interest in the 5650 was never financially motivated. I was attracted to the watch and it's horological refinements (as I saw and understood them) and, beyond the nut required to purchase I've never concerned myself with cost vs market value, paper gain, etc. As a collector who's never even considered selling one of my cherished prizes, in this way the 5650 is not unique.
Do I sleep better knowing this particular reference hasn't depreciated in a manner akin to the latest Maserati or AM, of course. But as with my pursuit of driveable assets (better described as toys), my going-in assumption in every instance is that these are depreciating collectibles. The rare occasion wherein one of my prized acquisitions appreciates is just that, a luck-of-the-draw anomaly unlikely to be repeated 😞

.....yours is a very interesting question. For one, I had never looked at a potential watch purchase as you suggest...so interesting to contemplate. I also think it is interesting as I suspect it really applies to collectors who only collect modern watches. For a vintage collector, the price one pays is the price it is....there is no uncertainty regarding secondary "value". Thirdly, when buying this watch, one actually doesn't know what the true secondary price will be. Since only 500 are made and when one puts one's name down, there really is no idea where its secondary value will be, I suspect that the answer to your question must, by default, be that one believes in the watch and is prepared to pay the asking price without knowing where its secondary value is or will be. Remember it has trebled but only some time after the very first purchase decision was made....back in Basel. Back in the Spring in Basel, it was not clear where the secondary price would be....
I am not quite as good as 5980 in that I have, historically, sold some of the Patek Philippe that I bought. Having said that, 90% of the Patek Philippe that I have ever bought remain in my collection. My criteria for buying a watch ensures that there is some solidity to why I want something. I don't always get it right, but as a general rule, I do get it right and I keep the vast majority of the watches I buy. If I was making that decision based on whether future price was likely to be up or whether the secondary price would be at a discount or premium, then I would assuredly end up with not only watches that I didn't like so much, but also a much higher turnover of watches. I would also consider myself a dealer or speculator rather than a watch collector.....

I buy what I like but I’m learning to be very selective since I have limited funds for this hobby.

We kind of know, here from the vast knowledge and from historical facts, that Patek Philippe’s special watches are very desirable and will hold or appreciate in the near or long term.
Having said that, I have not sold or trade any of my watches to fund another because I cannot accept the “loss” so I only want to feel better knowing after buying any watch, I can enjoy and still, maybe someday I do need to sell for any reasons, it’s not painful.
I also want to keep those watches because I like them then, and I’m keeping them as a reminder of my watch collecting journey.

Hi Raymond, an excellent question ! IMO, in addition to movement, complications, dial design and finishing...
rarity is also a consideration. Pricing aside, 5he production run of 300 is naturally an attraction vs a regular production piece that sits in the counter of an AD.

Congratulations , this is a very technically superior watch. With a very cool design.
At first i kinda thought it was huge but i realized it was just right. Consider me a convert that this is a good watch. Worthy to be a Patek.
