Summoning all 5004 owners, I've been doing some research recently and have found 3 different movement architectures. Two of which I'm certain are correct, a third that seems a little odd. I won't credit photo credits because if there is a problem with any of the watches I don't want to be pointing fingers or anything.

Numerous changes to the 5004 were made over the years...
Numerous changes to the 5004 were made over the years to improve reliability and function. The top center plate was changed, but there are more significant changes deeper below. Theoretically, all three top plates might even be interchangeable among all three watches (as the screw holes and pivot holes probably haven't changed). There are deeper changes further below. When one serviced their 5004, they do generally update the movement to the "better" movement design.

The 5004! Thanks for posting this material. I have owned a 3970 for a few years, but have only seen two or three 5004’s in person. It’s a great watch ( in some ways it is my favorite Patek Philippe ever produced. I look forward to hearing what some of our colleagues here on the Forum have to say. I was not aware that the mechanism had changed at all over the years. Great material. Thanks again for posting!

Congratulations on your 3970, I'm picking on up myself very soon, it's currently being serviced. The 5004 is something I'm working towards as well and hope to own one sooner than later as I believe that as soon as a wider audience discovers how exceptionally beautiful and important the 5004 is, prices will skyrocket into spheres one can only dream of owning.

The first
I habe mever seen before, looks strange to me. The third includes the later update fixating the Octopus wheel (you will notice the new bridge making the Octopus more stable). This is how a later or serviced 5004 will look like today

made me curious. Just checked my archive - indeed, when they first showed the piece, the movement looked like in the first image (around 1996).

The first was the one that really had me uneasy the first time I saw it. Thanks very much for confirming with your archives, it's so lovely to see and dissect these updates in movements in such a short and limited production. Patek will always fascinate me !
