5110G / spring bars Q
Want to try different straps on this 5110g, I know it is recommended to use gold spring bars on gold cases to avoid damaging the holes at the lugs. Do you follow this recommendation? Is the damage caused by using steel spring bars really something to worry about in a piece like this, where there would not be any abuse to the watch besides normal wear.
Some of the straps I would like to try come with quick release spring bars that are certainly steel.... Thanks for sharing your opinions

Good question. A potential alternative would be to ask Patek Philippe to make your custom colored straps...
Assuming that you're after custom colors, Patek Philippe has a very wide range of straps in their strap catalogue. But if you're after materials that isn't offered in their catalogue, then you're out of luck. Personally, I would avoid using steel spring bars on a watch that came with gold spring bars as there is a small chance that there would be some eventual excessive wear.

yes, perhaps find straps that do not come with quick release, and just use the spring bars on the current strap

My local AD is not the most helpful, unfortunately.... and besides, as I did not buy this watch from them, they even questioned the authenticity of it, go figure! ... they leave a lot to be desired, and I have been a client for some years, buying other watches from them... as an example, I asked for a Reverso strap about a year ago, the answer I received was that ĀØwe are not good at providing accessoriesĀØ (I ended buying while on a trip)...
So perhaps on a next trip will visit a PP AD or Boutique and maybe I can get lucky

I use quick release steel pins on all my straps, including for my white gold ones. I changes strap every week minimum and so far I did not have any issue. I do not have a PP but I donāt think this should be an issueā¦

actual experience is very valuable!... would guess the potential issues would come after many years of use and depending on the use of the watch (for example, a white gold diver that would see some tougher use, perhaps)

Have worn many different strap with many different spring bars on my 5110G. Quite sure the bars have all been steel and quite sure I haven't noticed any problems because of them!

No, I donāt think you have anything to worry about. Whether the springbars are white gold, steel, or otherwise, if you arenāt proficient at changing them youāll scratch the inside of the lugs anyway. But who cares, itās on the inside ā no one else sees it. Being afraid to change them and sticking with one strap is worse IMO. Straps have the ability to transform a watch and youād be missing out.
Technically steel is stronger than white gold but both are just as secure for spring bar purposes. Never had an issue with steel on the springbar holes instead of white gold.
I change straps for a living ā so long as youāre careful, diligent, and do it in a brightly lit area, youāre going to be fine. And then test it right after before you wear the watch. It will be so much more enjoyable when you get to change out straps yourself!
