I think the 3970 is a great reference which works very well on smaller wrists.

I’m glad I bought one and it still is my grail watch. It is perfection.
Herd mentality, VERY normal for newbies and followers. 3970, 5970, Royal Oak... The Big Box Store herd has been going on for decades in many retail markets. Bennie babies, fidget spinners, Labubu, etc....
You do make a great point about the 'in' thing, this month the 3970 is hyped, next month the 5970, then the FPJ ____, the one after that a VC ___ or AP ____. Maybe even the ALS _____. It is very, very sad their Trilogy Marketing Campaign scheme could have greatly hurt the OG.... Breguet. Why did they exclude Breguet?
The true greatness is in being your own man. 3970 is a winner. Next up for you could be a nice RW Smith, RR, or MB&F. Perhaps something amazing from Greubel Forsey or Kari Voutilainen. Be your own man. 
This is the staple of new vintage Patek.
The moment is appropriate for the case and all displays are proportionate in harmony something that the 5970 is not.

3970 is a beauty and I preferred it over the 5970
but after 8 years I sold it. I'm not as much a collector than somebody who enjoy wearing nice watches. Imho the 36mm diameter doesn't work with the thickness of the watch. I also don't like the 5970 that much. Imho due to the small movement the dial layout is out of proportion. I don't care about the market. My PCC is the unpopular 5270 first generation as it combines the dial layout from the 3970 without tachymeter scale and the case proportions of the 5970. But hey, there is the right choice for everybody. At least for everybody who can afford it 😉

Main reasons :
The 5970’s case design is a masterpiece and unique only to the 5970. I don’t think it has been reused in other references. The closest would be the 5270, but the lugs and case band differ significantly.
The 40x13mm is perfectly proportioned. Also, 40mm is just a number, the case design makes the 5970 wear closer to a 38mm. Sometimes I feel it’s about the same size as my 5153.
I prefer a chrono with a tachymeter. Gives it a sportier look.

My vote is the 3970 because of its potential versatility
Versatile because if I were ever to acquire it, both my wife and I would be able to share/wear it (with different straps of course). Also if we pass it down to the next generation the lucky person could be male or female.
