I would have to say no.   I love Rolex also, but there is no way I would sell a 3940 for a Day Date Platinum.   I love the DD and have an Uncle and several friends who own one.   Beautiful watch and the weight is really what makes it special.   But the Patek is truly beautiful. A masterpiece of craftsmanship, detailing and elegance.  

I don't know if this is the right analogy and forgive me if it is not, but if I had a choice of a Mercedes Benz S Class or an Bentley Arnage at the same cost, no way would I pick the S Class.   I should point out that I own a S Class already, so I do like the car.

I don't know if you need an everyday watch that is tougher than the Patek, but if that is what has prompted your current line of thinking, I would say keep the Patek and buy an steel Datejust.   The additional cost is minimal compared to the Day Date and you have the best of both worlds.

No, I think not.

The 3940 is one of the great watches of our time. The Plt DD certainly is a fine watch but nowhere near the same league of the 3940.

Why do you wish to make such a trade?

If the Patek is too fragile than perhaps it would make sense. But at the end of a day you are essentially trading the finest perpetual movement for a strong water proof case.

I tend to think of Rolexes as being, well, in the middle.  My wife has one and wears it for all occasions and loves it.  I'm either at the office or otherwise wearing a suit (etc.) in which case I'll wear a vintage PP or UN.  Or I'm out playing or working in the yard, where I'll wear a Citizen or Casio.

It's a purely a personal decision in my opinion.

Steve, that is the one and only one! Most beautiful DD (excluding Masterpiece models) around. I have to have that watch!  3940 is not one of my favorite PPs, that's why I would do the trade.

But a complicated PP for a precious metal rolex - no way !

I figured most would say no way, but.... you never know. The Patek is like a fine work of art that sits whispering....

The Rolex is T and A.
