Dear Patek Community,
I bought my first (and probably only) Patek yesterday after a a very long journey. 10 years ago I was lost and not really sure of what I wanted to do with my life or where I was heading. Then I came across a Patek catalogue, fell in love with the watches inside it, read up on its history and heritage, visited the museum in Geneve, kept an eye on vintage watch auctions and promised myself a Patek if I ever found my way. Well I did find my vocation, albeit later in life (I'm now almost 35) and now that I'm halfway through Medical School I decided to finally treat myself. The Patek in question is a 2006 5800/1A in mint condition and I feel very lucky to finally have the chance to wear the watch on my wrist.
However, after buying it something played on my mind over the weekend. My only other watch for the last 17 odd years has been a Tag Heuer Chronograph that I have worn almost every day at all times. This includes showers, baths, while playing squash or tennis, scuba diving, backpacking across jungles and mountains, taking exams etc. It has been a true and constant companion over these past years. I chose the Nautilius primarily because I wanted it to fit in with my active lifestyle and I wanted a watch that would become my new companion for the years ahead.
The dillema I guess then is whether to take off the Nautilius for every shower and bath in order to prolong its life span or wear the watch constantly like I have done with my Tag so that it becomes a part of me. Should I be sensible and look after the watch so that it looks pristine 5 years from now or do I allow it to take the odd bump and scratch here and there but allow myself to feel its heartbeat and have the opportunity to see its beauty at all times.
I took my first bath with the watch this evening and I for one feel happy with my decision and look forward to the years ahead. But I did want to see who else out there in the Patek community loves their watch as much as I do but has also made the decision to wear it at all times?
Best wishes,
K

Patek IMO. I think you will do well wearing it as an everyday watch to get the most out of it.Unless you own multiple pieces, this will maximise your enjoyment of it and make it feel like a part of you. Use the Tag for the really rough stuff though.Checking the seals is a must if it is to see water. Also make sure the bracelet pin is properly secure as it appears to be sticking out.
Good luck & enjoy this beautiful Nautilus.
cheers

Congrats on the "new" Patek. I hope you enjoy it, in the shower or out.
Just look out for the screw at 6 oclock, nearest to the endpiece of the bracelet. It appears to be working its way out.
Dear PP Community,
Many thanks for all your responses and advice. Gosh some of you really are eagle eyed to spot the pin that was starting to pop out at the top of the bracelet - it has now been reinserted properly - thank you! The watch has just been serviced by an AD so it's guarranteed for at least a year but I will make annual checks to ensure it remains waterproof. I have been wearing it constantly all week and so far it has endured 2 sessions of squash, 3 swim sessions and even a 12k run - so far so good!
Best wishes,
K
