Patek Philippe

While many have mixed feelings of this 1st PP's in house manual chrono only watch, 5170 is a piece that we may appreciate it more in metal.  Crown winding is so smooth and a joyful experience.   I do not hope to change anyone's mind that there is something lacking on this piece, but imho it is a nice dress watch, and with a black strap, it gives some vintage feel of this watch   With her siblings...

I'll give the 5070 a 99/100 score (would be 100/100 if it had Breguet numbers) and the 5170 gets 85/100

If only that watch was not so expensive, last listprice I saw was a disillusionment ...  53% MORE than a 5070R at the end of 2008  :-(  :-(  :-(

Bruno.M1, your 5070R is gorgeous.  I too fall in love with this piece but could not find a new one now

 

 

I would sum it in saying that the 5170 is certainly more coherent than the 5070, but this last one is such a genius crook that I love it more than the 5170.

Now, I still have to see the 5170 in a different color of metal, and  if they could change the roman numbers for arabic, my opinion may change.

Both models have pros and cons.  I also agree that arabic numbers and chrono go better than roman numbers do..this is something I wish they change Lange Dato too

The 5070 is becoming a legend.....
Too big for a traditional Patek, it looks smaller because of the dial game,
extremely comfortable to wear, beautiful dial, a movement that will no longer
be made.... but too big to wear for certain wrists, attracts scratches and difficult
to polish.....
All in all a modern classic with a great dial design... Mr. Stern is a master of dial design...
(also you could search for Amanico's review on the model comparing t to several chronos
and graded accordingly....)

5170 does not really look appealing at first photographically sight, but in metal it
is superb....
Great and beautiful movement and, although I am not a big fan of yellow gold, it is stunning
in metal....
Better size ( for my wrist) and with a traditional look which is timeless...

I am very, very anxious to see 5170 in the metal because I'm sold on the pictures, but my AD has not acquired one yet. 5070 definitely seems to be the favorite, but it didn't work for me. Thanks for the nice pics!

I can just say the 5070 is a very beautfiul watch but the 5170 is very beautfiul too and the technical superiority makes me forget the 5070 easily.

All that in a much more appealing size for me.

Sizewise and technically, 5170 may have a plus

....the king is dead, long live the king.
Having tried on a 5070, I found that it's a piece I could never wear - it's just far too big for my wrists and I find the case size vs calibre size slightly disingenuous. More interestingly I think the 5170 will age significantly better from a design point of view and has a far more honest size. The calibre of course is said to be on a different planet.
I understand we're to refrain from talking prices SPECIFICALLY on this forum but I will say that the 5170j has a monumental list price - that's if you're luck enough to be able to actually get one. Patek UK told me it's an application piece.

.....The salon on Bond St, London told me it WAS and had a 2 year wait lost post approval.

Thanks for the helpful comments.  While not an application piece, it was introduced a year ago at Basel and I'm still waiting to see one in the metal!

This watch passion can be trying on the patience - for now I just live vicariously through the fortunate ones who are kind enough to share their experience....
