While many have mixed feelings of this 1st PP's in house manual chrono only watch, 5170 is a piece that we may appreciate it more in metal. Crown winding is so smooth and a joyful experience. I do not hope to change anyone's mind that there is something lacking on this piece, but imho it is a nice dress watch, and with a black strap, it gives some vintage feel of this watch
With her siblings...
Hope you enjoy, and thank you for watching
but that doesn't mean I don't like the 5170
Gorgeous too !
I'll give the 5070 a 99/100 score (would be 100/100 if it had Breguet numbers) and the 5170 gets 85/100
If only that watch was not so expensive, last listprice I saw was a disillusionment ... 53% MORE than a 5070R at the end of 2008 :-( :-( :-(
Congrats with at least 3 of my favorite watches !!

I would sum it in saying that the 5170 is certainly more coherent than the 5070, but this last one is such a genius crook that I love it more than the 5170.
Now, I still have to see the 5170 in a different color of metal, and if they could change the roman numbers for arabic, my opinion may change.
Best,
Nicolas.
Both models have pros and cons. I also agree that arabic numbers and chrono go better than roman numbers do..this is something I wish they change Lange Dato too
I have been wearing a 5170 for the past two days. Comparing it to my 5070R I have noticed some of the following comparisons.
- The 5170 is lighter and wears more comfortably than the 5070. That said I do miss the heft and presence of the 5070.
- The new Patek caliber is MUCH superior to the Lemania based one. The hacking seconds and the instantaneous second jump are a joy. However, I am little disappointed in the new lateral clutch gear arrangement. Although it is supposed to limit the "jump" of the second hand on commencement of starting the chronograph, my 5170 seems to stutter similarly as my 5070
- The Calatrava case of the 5170 is an instant classic but it does disappear compared to the 5070 (not actually a bad thing).
- I have no less love for the 5070 after wearing the 5170. The character and feel of both watches are so different that I would be happy with either. However, having both is certainly better
I love reading posts about how great or bad or unacceptable one watch is than another. Just as a 130 and 1463 are each special in their own way so is the 5070 and 5170.
The king is dead.
Long live the king.

Thanks for the helpful comments. While not an application piece, it was introduced a year ago at Basel and I'm still waiting to see one in the metal!
This watch passion can be trying on the patience - for now I just live vicariously through the fortunate ones who are kind enough to share their experience....
