Patek Philippe

Hi guys,
I'm considering making a purchase of a Patek. This would be the first Patek I will own, and I'm confused as to which piece to go for amongst the following:

Nautilus 5712R,  5980R or 5980/1A.

I know either of these pieces would be a great buy, but i will sincerely appreciate opinions, pictures, wrist shots, and perspectives of you guys that have had the amazing privilege to own this special time pieces.

Just my opinion... Of the modern patek Nautilus... the 5712 seems to have a certain panache... that the 5980 does not... 5712 being more versatile.. sporty yet equally elegant... but also a little mysterious because of the moon... I dunno... just prefer it to the pretend-ruggedness/sportiness of the 5980... which will never be a sportwatch.... but the 5712 can really be a sporty casual watch... somehow more authentically a Patek... Didn't mean to be so harsh against the 5980... I've always had mixed feelings about it... but to clarify: the reason I think it can't really be a sportwatch (which it very much LOOKS like) is that bezel--which will just never hold up to actual devil-may-care wear, which a sportwatch is supposed to hold up to. The 5712... while sharing the bezel... somehow ISN'T a sportwatch, or isn't trying to be... no doubt the 5980 is robust on the inside and all that... but its a big beefy chronograph wearing a too-easy-to-ruin bezel.... but hey... if you are only looking for a sportwatch in NAME... why not the 5980... I just always think that a steel sportwatch should be able to take some dings and scratches without becoming marred on contact....

I agree wholeheartedly too.

...I give a thumbs way up to the 5712 1/a. The 5980 1/a just doesn't do it for me.

... would be my choice, because I like the dial (moonphase, power reserve etc.) better. But then, I am prejudiced, as I got myself the 5712G a few years ago

The 5980 is larger and thicker but wears well on the wrist. 5712 is smaller and wears just as well. Both are very nice pieces for a "first" Patek.

The 5980 has the same movement as the iconic 5960. 5980 vs 5712 ~ Chronograph or Moonphase?

The best is to try them both on your wrist and see which "speaks" to you.

My choice would be the 5712. But then again, the 5980.........

since many people who are in the market for a Nautilus have exactly this same question. For me, the answer is the 5980/1A-014 (black dial). I was never a huge fan of the 5712, only because I felt that the combination of complications did not really make sense in a "sport" watch. When I first saw the 5980/1A, I was really into the idea of a single register, dual hand chronograph because at the time I couldn't think of anyone doing this. Also, I like the idea of a manufacture flyback. Also, if you are enterprising enough, you could use the chronograph as a second time zone (PM for details on that idea). The color of the dial is completely subjective. Some prefer the more traditional Nautilus steel blue but I like the black. The price of the 5980/1A and 5980R is the only off-putting feature of the pieces. I also like the look of the 5980R, but wearing a leather strap sport watch seems kind of backwards. If you happen to switch it for the composite strap, it takes away from the elegance.

Good luck with you decision, it's not an easy one.

I prefer the complication of the 5980... but the slender case of the 5712.

Difficult answer... so at the end I would take the 5712 because I love the 240 caliber.

My brother and GF both loves the 5980 but I wouldnt think twice before buying the 5712.
It's WAY thinner, much more elgeant and better looking imo, go for that one and DONT FORGET TO POST PICS!!!

.... so i went to my dealer yesterday to pull the trigger on one of the mentioned pieces, it just happened that they had just received a new Annual calender chrono 5960R. I really loved the 5960. So i told my dealer to allow me time to consult my good folks here at the forum to help me make up my mind on which way to go. Can you all please, pardon my indecisive mind in this case, and share your thoughts also on the 5960 against the already debated pieces.
I want to buy a very special piece that i would really enjoy and keep for a long time.

Well, the 5960 was first launched in 2006, Patek's first totally in-house automatic chrono. it is a very nice piece and sits well on the wrist as do your other two choices. It is an iconic piece. Some do not prefer the way the annual calendar is split over the dial at the 10, 12 and 2:00 position. For me, I don't mind it as much since I prefer apertures over sub dials.

As for the dial colors, I do not prefer the two tone gray dial and vacillate between the blue and anthracite dials. There's something about that blue sunburst dial and yet, that anthracite... ahhhhh!

The pushers are smooth and sporty looking on the 5960 but I prefer the style of the 5980, 5070 or so.

The 5980 has the same movement as the 5960 and half its price~ sans the annual calendar and power reserve. The 5980 is a little more water resistant.

With that said, any one of your three choices will be a GREAT choice but ask yourself this... which one is the one you cannot live without?

Thanks again Bob, seriously I've never had this much difficulty buying any watch. I've fallen so in love with all Patek pieces, I'm very close to pulling the trigger on 2 instead, I just really cannot help it lol. My AD is not helping either, I was also shown the 5205, and it is such a beautiful watch. I feel like trading/getting rid of all my Audemars for the Pateks, I've seriously falling in-love with Patek.
I'm very grateful to everyone else who have also taking their time to make contribution, and share their opinion. In all sincerity I'm still more confused than ever, every PP I was shown seemed like i couldn't take it over the next, (i wish i could take all)

Now, I'm really jealous!!!! LOL

I have yet to see the 5205 in the metal but I just LOVE the design. (It sort of reminds me of the 5196P... sort of. Well, maybe not that much LOL) Judging from the photos I've seen of it, I think I prefer the two-tone rhodium/silver gray dial over the black/slate dial, but my choice may change once i see it in the metal. So far, it hasn't gotten to my AD yet long enough for me to get down there to play with it.

If you travel a lot, the 24 hour sub dial will come in handy and it actually appears to be big enough to see it without using glasses! LOL I love the 324 caliber.

Hey, what happened? First it was between 5980/5960 and now you may get two? LOLOLOL! Which two are you contemplating? And now, maybe the 5205? You lucky dog!

As for selling your APs? Wow! You've been bitten by the incurable disease of horology, this time carried by the Patek bug.

I know i didn't mention the 5170, but i fell madly in-love with the movement.
Tell me what you think about my choices.

... what pleases you. I buy what I like and I wear what I buy, albeit I have a very small collection. All that I buy I keep so I can pass them down to my three sons. So, make sure that whatever you buy it is because YOU like it and not what I say or anyone's suggestions.

Of course, you now added the 5170 into the plot to keep your 5980 company. LOL

Well I like the 5170, which, I believe,replaced the 5070. It has a nice in-house 29-535 caliber and is a manual wind. I like the type of pushers as I stated previously, over the 5960's round, stopwatch looking pushers. It is a little smaller (39 mm) than the 5205 (40 mm) you were looking at. BTW, got to play with the 5205 today, gray/black dial. Very nice piece.

Aesthetically speaking, I'm not a fan of the applied markers and would rather have the Roman numbers like the 5070. To me, the applied markers are too thin and too long. The sub dials are slightly off center, sitting below the halfway point and I don't mind that. What I do mind is that it cuts into the Pulsations Meter. Not sure if it could've been done but if the sub dials were a little closer together toward the center it would've opened the entire pulsations meter, making it, IMHO, a cleaner looking dial.

I do have a question of curiosity, though. The 5205 is not a chrono, has a 24 H subdial, day/night indicator and an annual calendar feature. Are you creating a theme of chronographs since your two choices are chronos or is it you just happen to love these two models?

All in all, I'll end with how I started...buy what you like.

Hi Bob, How are you doing my friend? sorry i didn't find the time to reply earlier, i got very busy at the office.
My final buy ended up to be the 5980, and the 5205. I had a change of mind about the 5170, plus my dealer told me i would have to wait longer.
I'm very excited, i will have the 2 watches in just a few weeks. I will share pictures once I have them.
It has been a very exciting process, I'm very grateful to everyone who made contributions, and helped me make my decision. I was so happy to read all responses, and i sincerely enjoyed each and everyone one of the posts.

Any comments on it... the way it wears, weight, feelings of the pushers?

Do you use the chrono function much?

first the weight, at 145 grams very comfy to wear IMO, but I have to say I'm used to wear watches up to 200 gr ( AP ROO, Panerai etc ...)

my biggest fear was that this watch would be to small in terms of size compared to the rest of my collection and the fact that I allready had to let go a 2 Rolexes just a few months after I bought them due to this.

All in all I didn't regret a second this Nautilus, it's a sporty but also elegant watch and the bracelet fits nicely on the wrist.  I have had no problems with the pushers so far and the chrono works fine, in fact I use the chrono constantly as a seconds hand, this way you see at least something moving on the dial

I'm on the lookout for a 5960P with blue dial to, but since the price went up from 52K to 65K Euro, in just a few months .... I'll gladly say (thank you) but no way José, a nearly 30% increase for the same thing is outrageous IMO ....

so I'll stick to my beloved 5980 I guess ....

 

about the 5960P. Was playing with one just yesterday and the prices now, for me at least, are out of my reach. :-(
