....than my recently purchased 5712. However the latter seems to be stuck to my arm. So very very comfortable to wear. Much lighter than my 5980. And the dial is even slightly better looking than my 5980? Hmmm...new found love? Or am I just slightly seduced by a new comers beauty? Time will show which watch will actually get more wrist time.

These 2 are very different: The 5712 is a  more chic sport, while the 5980 is a sport sport chic.

The feeling is not the same, the 5980 looking bigger on the wrist, witjh more presence.

The 5980 is the extrem expression of a sporty Nautilus.

I waved a long time between these 2, and first got the 5712.

If I had to get another Nautilus in my collection, I would now hesitate between the Vintage, which is a killer, and the 5980.

I got tired of the moonphase you always have to set, on the 5712.

Cool pair, nonetheless.

Because I think that slenderness is a key point for the Nautilus design and the 5712 is much more convincing on this topic... but of course, they are my two cents...

I started out with the 5711 four years ago. It was a dream come true. But the the arrival of the 5980 two years ago had the 5711 stand back in a dark corner and the 5980 became one of my fav watches of all time. But as Foversta mentions, the slenderness is so appealing and far more true to the original Nautilus of 1976 compared to the more buff 5980.

In terms of setting the moon phase all the time, dear friend Nic, I did not even think of this? But not sure if this will much a problem for me.

I am just like you, I got the 5980 first, then later just couldn't resist the 5712.  Now that I think of it, I don't wear the 5980 that much, why?  I guess I have other watches of similar nature. a sporty, chunky style watch on bracelet.  So when you want a tough looking watch and don't want to worry about getting a scratch that much, you will not pick 5980, I'll pick my Rolexes, AP ROO or even my VC Overseas.  Whereas 5712 can go under a shirt and jacket.

I initially bought the 5711 and had to sell it in order to buy the 5980. I have to admit that 5711 sits much better on the wrist but I do prefer the bolder presence of the 5980. Being my only bracelet watch, I prefer it to be a little sportier.

Get the set of cufflinks; then you can wear the 5712/1A as a formal watch.  Truly a very versatile watch that can go from the courthouse to the club house.  What I like to call a "James Bond watch."  

5712 is not good for a dip in the pool?

The 5712 models are only rated for 60 meter depths.  I don't think 60 meter depth resistance is good enough for swimming duty.  

how a watch capable of 60 meters underwater cannot stand up to a shower. The depth ratings from all the Swiss watch companies do not mean what they say. Thus, a watch certified to 30 meters should never be submerged even though it can go down 30 meters. Go figure.

But admittedly have a problem with these 'maritime' watches that supposedly cannot hold out the water when you go deeper than the dishes in your kitchen. My AP RO 15300 included. 50 m WR only!

but never immerse it under water, I have my 5712 with me in the shower as well, so far no issue.    30M is just good for keeping the moisture out or wearing it in the rain.

... i got the 5980A, wore it for 2 years most of the time, but couldn't resist the 5712A... and the 5980R So got both of them.
