My name is Sam, I got my first Patek at 33. How old are/were you?
Many consider Patek a watch for an older more sophisticated person. I own/have owned a variety of brands from Rolex, Panerai, IWC, Audemars Piguet & now have acquired pieces from the most respected watch house (as it's hand made & not factory built). However, there has been comments that the watch does not match my frumpy t-shirt & shorts lifestyle. I believe it's an individual's choice of expression. What do you guys think?
It's great that the pieces are very understated & typically only appeal to connoisseurs.
I was 35 when I first fell in love with a Patek. And I got it when I was 39.
It was a 5110P. I still own it.

I guess I was 46 when I bought my 1st
and I did it to celebrate a big tanker deal. After that I have made many more these deals than what I have bought Pateks. However, I still have more than a handful and at the moment there are none I would need to get.

Patek Philippe watches are indeed hand-made, but the term factory-built is true as well (they're built in a factory). Are you trying to state that Patek Philippe watches are not built on a traditional factory assembly line? Because that's what it looks like you're trying to state. And I wonder how you got this information? From conjecture or fact?
Many Patek Philippe watches do go with t-shirts and shorts, although some don't go well with that. It's individual choice and expression.
We are all very happy for you that you got your first Patek Philippe timepiece at 33. It is younger than most; but it's probably not the youngest. But remember, owning a Patek Philippe doesn't make you a great person, or a more sophisticated person. It's just another "thing" one can buy if they have the money.
FYI. Some facts. Most Patek Philippe watch movements are made on an assembly line. In fact, every watch Patek Philippe except for the "Grand Complication" class of watches are made on an assembly line (with very few exceptions). Grand Complication watches by Patek Philippe go through double assembly by one master-craftsman. Petite Complication and simple models (with very few exceptions) have their movements assembled once on an assembly line by several different individuals who assemble individual modules. Hand-made may be subject to interpretation as well, as there are varying degrees of "handmade."

Is sadly common amongst higher end brands of all sorts of products...
While I don't own a PP yet, I can imagine feeling the same thing you must have felt. I too am still fairly young (although not 19), and when buying a first 'nice' suit, I just felt the store employee think "This isn't someone worth spending much time on"... Picking a few things of the rack, and walking away..
After buying elsewhere, and returning at a later moment (a couple of months) whilst wearing the new suit, the same employee suddenly 'accepts' you as a client. Recognising you as someone who's already acquainted to similar things as they're selling, and probably looking for more.
I do realise it's a common way of thought, but I stil consider this a very sad and cramped (if you get what I mean) way of thinking, and an even worse business practice. Especially when the client (me) has a real interest in buying something nice, and a simple question or two could have confirmed my interests.

Well I like some brands more than other that for sure
but primary I love the certain model no matter the brand name behind it
If the watch is nice than it's nice regardless the brand of course
level of finish and movement quality differ and that's for sure.
MY statement was purely based on financial reasons
far from it that I wouldn't love to have 5078P or 59595P or 5170J
hell I would die happily with 5124J and we are speaking only about current products.
Somehow post like I wear shorts and Hawaii shirt and 200K watch on wrist do you find it OK?

My mother taught me when I was young not to believe half of what people told me.
So maybe the person in the shorts has xyz watch but maybe he doesn't!
Maybe someone who is under 30 owns a sky moon but maybe its not true.
My mother taught me something else. Usually the people who have things
don't talk about it and the ones who want to have it or 'appear' to have it,
have in actual fact - very little....

Hi Sam, my name is Fricks and i've been an addict...
... ever since i got my 5070R, i was 35yrs old, it was 5 yrs ago. Ever since, i've slowly sold most of my watches, which were AP, RM, JLC, Lange, Rolex,.... to buy mainly Patek.
Now, about your dress code, looks like you need yourself a nautilus. The 5970, if it was Wg it would have been easier, but the platinum with the black dial is very strong and even if it can work with a jeans and shirt, i guess shorts, and t-shirts might be not the best combo, but that's me.
As for your comment about Patek being hand made and the other brands you've mentioned are factory made. Let me tell you that most of the parts of the movement are now manufactured and cut by machines. Handcraft intervention comes in in the finishing of the movement mainly.
The movement of your 5970P is based on a lemania ebauche. That might not sounds very sexy to your years, but the paradox is that man's intervention on finishing every part, modifying and building that movement is more important here than on its successor the 5270G which has the new in-house movement.

Got my first PP last year when I was 30yrs. Got 5167 1st and then my 2nd PP was 5712/1a, 5960p was my 3rd PP, 5140g was my 4th PP, 5th PP was 7010/1r for my wife, 6th PP was 5726/1a, 7th PP was vintage 4918/5 for the wife, sold my 5167 to get the 5164a for my 7th PP at 32yrs. old. Sold all my other watches like AP, Lange and IWC. All roads lead to PP for me. There's no minimum age for Pateks. I like classic watches, clothes, shoes, that's my style.
I am 31…and I shall get one by 33!

back in 2007 feb 28 ,i got my first pp. great feeling. i have 5296r in sectoral dial in 2007. the manual wind 5196r in 2008. then graduated in 5130g wt , in 2013. 2013 i am 50.

28 years old; purchased a Calatrava as my first PP.....
after that, I wore mostly modern Rolex and then I saw the 5070g when I was 44 years old. I was told by the salesman at a well-known PP AD in NYC that I would have no chance of getting a 5070 from them and that they had far more valuable customers ahead of me. I was perplexed at their attitude but honestly I did not know how difficult it was, if one wanted to spend $50k on a PP. Three years later, I found an AD who was willing to sell me a 5070R, which was my second PP. No regrets at any of my PP purchases since! ;-)

Hi Sam, where I come from many consider Patek a good gift for their children as a rite of passage into adulthood, so for their fortunate off-spring the answer to your question would typically be "on my 21st birthday". The Nautilus is popular for boys, Calatrava or Twenty-four for girls, and the Aquanaut seems to be a good bet for both sons and daughters. I would agree that Patek is "the most respected watch house" but quite often it is for their marketing prowess over their technical merit (I am NOT saying that they do not also possess formidable technical merit!). Others have responded to the "factory built" comment and I have nothing to add to that, though I would ignore comments about watch/dress combos as I agree that "it's an individual's choice of expression". Having said that, if you truly want pieces that are "understated & typically only appeal to connoisseurs", you might want to look elsewhere. Pateks are very prominent and enjoy a very wide following; they appeal mainly to the mass market (although also to connoisseurs as well of course!). The independent watch-makers fulfil your "ONLY appeal to connoisseurs" brief far more successfully as many of them spend little or nothing on communication or advertising. I do not own a PP as yet. However, I have two VC's. One I inherited when I was 26. And the second I bought myself when I was 34. I am 36 now. I still have them both and I love them both, and I believe they represent the pinnacle of horology, both in their own way, and no less than PP in any way.
I have a few PP's on my wish-list and I hope I can fulfill my PP dream as well.
I do not think it matters how old one is when they got their first PP etc. Also, every brand and product has its own prejudices about whether it is for old people or young people. What is important is how your own values and how they are expressed, and if your material belongings can be a positive part of that.
