...but consider for a moment a comparison of 2 storied watchhouse, Patek and Vacheron. While Patek has chosen to recycle their time proved but diameter challanged cal. 215 as the powerplant for their Calatrava 5196, Vacheron has gone a different route entirely with their similarly styled Patrimony Traditionnelle.
Patek wisely chose to hide the petite 22mm cal. 215 behind the solid caseback of their 37mm Calatrava, while Vacheron proudly displays their 29mm cal 4400 thru the saphire caseback of their 38mm Patrimony. Add to that more than 20 hours of additional power reserve afforded by the larger cal 4400 and you'll soon discover that size does matter.
Otherwise classic and similar styled, basic hour, minute, and small subseconds watches - yet one watchhouse takes the easy road while the other chooses the road less travelled.
Wish that I were able to post a side by side comparison of these 2 models, but a quick google search should suffice. I know that there are many more examples, but i think this speaks to the issue raised by the OP.
I own watches from each of these makers, and am a great admirer of both, but unless Patek has plans to reintroduce a 33mm Calatrava then I believe the time for a new manual wind movement is long overdue!
