Patek 5146G-001 vs 5960/1A

I have an order for a 5146G-001 which will arrive in a few weeks. 

My budget is already a bit stretched but with the recent price increase I might be able to stretch myself for a 5960/1A.

I know that the styling on 5960/1A is a bit controversial but anyone have any thoughts?

The 5960/1A won't be coming in for a few months and supposed in June Patek will re-evaluate the situation with the currencies so who knows what will happen to prices then.  This recent reduction in prices has left me wondering whether if I should spend more or less money in watches.

My other patek is a 5712/1A.

you think too much about prices, for my taste. Be lucky that you can afford a PP and don´t do any compromises. If the later is needed, maybe you should take more time.

After getting my 5712/1a I thought of getting an annual calendar.

So it took me a few years to save up some money and I was quite content ordering the 5146.

However, Patek had to put the 5960 complication in SS and lower their prices -  all of which are leaving me to have seconds thoughts about my original plans.

Still I think you should not limit yourself to price tags when dreaming about watches. Listen to your heart, it is a luxury "hobby/addiction" and not a business case. From time to time we are (hopefully) able to fulfill some of our dreams. Find out what you really dream about/want and try to get this one. It may need even more time, but who cares mid-/longterm?!

A price tag shows the price only, but explains nothing about (personal) value. Even a HUGE discount doesn´t increase the value, does it.

Imagine that someone would give you a PP as a present. Well, it is not one of those you really like and would have chosen yourself. Still it is a PP, but the person said: "I got this one for you, because I got a huge discount on it!" ...

incoming watch first. The price fluctuation should not drive your decision as reductions going in are reflected going out in most instances. Its all the same in the end.

It's a personal choice of course.   If I were in that situation, I would stick with the 5146. 10 or 20 years from now, the 5146 will look like a great old classic, while the 5960/1A will be a "what were they thinking??" watch.   IMHO of course. If you have a 5712A and looking for a complement choosing between 5146G and 5960A seem simple on paper. The 5146G would be most things the 5712A is not. However not knowing anything about your lifestyle and preferences in life it is impossible to make a recommendation as in the end it comes down to how and when you would like to wear your Patek(s). For me personally I would go for the 5960A in a heartbeat and put a black strap on. It looks marvelous this way. 

Among modern annual calendars the 5205G with a black dial is amazing. Alternatively I would wait for Basel to see if they will release any new pieces.

I really don't understand Patek says it is not possible to get it on a leather strap... Or why they don't want to go for such a combo... I just don't get it.

amanico I agree with you on the black calf strap. Would look incredible. 

I suppose the thinking from Pateks side is that the watch case facing the strap is not highly polished as it is meant to face the steel bracelet. So if you put a soft strap on you would expose this "imperfection". It is a personal preference but would not bother me personally. 

I absolutely love my 5960P gray with gray croc strap, my most frequently worn time piece. So much that once I learned of this possibility of a black strap on the 5960A, it has not jumped to my top 3 on wish list…. would be a sportier (and far lighter) version for relaxed summer activities! Like a summer cruise in a vintage vehicle…

hi, 5146 is a beautiful annual calendar and stays classic and true to patek's dna. The 5160/1A is a very well built and finished watch but the dial,is very striking and looks more like a sports watch and is unconventional patek. But people say the 5960/1A may only have 1 yr of production run and is very popular amongst the middle eastern clients. They are both extremely different watches. Go with your gut feeling

In the end I went with 5146G.   (Please pardon my poor pix of the watch - like all pateks, they all look better real life)

It was sort of already made for me because the 5960 had been sold.  Originally, I wanted the R but the G turns out to have a versatile understated elegance that I really appreciate.

If the 5960/1a would only be a one year production then maybe I should have bought the 5960/1a.

On a side note, is there any reason why Patek came out with 5905P when they could have just continued with the 5960P?  After all, the 5960 has the power reserve meter and its chronograph has an extra counter.

Congratulations Paul on the 5146! The WG is definitely more understated and you can enjoy wearing it in many more occasions. Mine is the WG with the slate grey dial and enjoy wearing it wether it's for the weekend or for more formal purposes. I have ordered a matt black strap and I thought the dark brown strap doesn't really match the slate grey dial. RG versions are beautiful but really catches people's attention and I never liked people staring. I had a RG Jaeger LeCoultre Grande Reverso 8 days reserve and hardly wore it even though it was a beautiful piece. It was in it's box for almost the entire 8 years I had it and sold it finally

Thanks!  Actually WG with the slate dial would have been what I preferred but I just can't find it anywhere close to me.

5960/1A - the strap arrived

and PP buckle is ordered. I will replace the bracelet in two weeks.

I bought 5960/1A as a "nice to have watch". How wrong I was! Now when I have been wearing this reference for a month or so, I have learned to love it a lot. Everything is right in this watch and it is very readable. Even the bracelet - well, it a bit shiny - but it is perhaps the most comfortable bracelet I know.

The pricing of 5960/1A is good (compared with other Pateks). And the watch is simply great. Let's see how it feels with a "Racing Strap". I will report later.

But I have experienced the comfy of the bracelet and it also seems to loose its shine in a short time. So strap or bracelet - it's a wonderful watch.
