reference numbers
Hi there - I am new here
I am looking at getting my first PP, and I want to start with a 1960s or 70s ellipse of some kind. I am really struggling to work out the PP reference number system!
I wonder if there is a list of ref no's and model types somewhere online?
Alternatively are there any posts here that can help me to find my way through the myriad model types they have made - as I said my focus would be on simple (for Patek Philippe standards) wristwatches of the 60's and 70's

Hope you'll be able to find some elements on our Patek Philippe forum.
I don't know if there is such website, listing all Patek's references available on the net. Most of the work which has been trying to make an overall view of Patek's collection is mainly available in books support.
The simpler Pateks are very appealing watches indeed and carry the full Patek DNA. I think you're taking a good decision.
Concerning the period you're focusing I could find this (this may not be exhaustive), with manual or automatic movements.
Ellipse d'Or:
- 3546 (1974)
Calatrava:
- 2508, 2509, 2526, 2569, 2570, 2582 to 2594 (1958-1959)
- 3400 to 3413, 3414 to 3445 (1959-1960-1961). The latter has a beautiful and cleverly designed 27-460M caliber
- 2591, 3425, 3460 (1962)
- 3439 (1966)
Cushion shape:
- 3585 (1970)
- 3573 (1970)

There is a reference number system
but in order to understand it, you must first master the Chaos Theory.
Alternatively, start getting some books and from those you can find all the references you might need. In the beginning of my voyage to the Patek Land, I did not understand the reference system at all. Nowadays it's more like my other mother tongue.
I propose you start with the alphabets:
A=Steel
G=White Gold
J=Yellow Gold
P=Platinum
R=Rose Gold
And next the numbers...

I am surprised there is no online list of reference numbers and pictures of the relevant model. Perhaps a dedicated wiki-style site could be created that people can update freely! Is there a reason this hasn't been done? Unfortunately my web skills are not up to setting such a thing up - but I have already started compiling a list of models that I am interested in with pics and info such as I can find online, which I will share here soon
Dr Kol - can you point me in the direction of any books that cover the simpler end of the men's models? I am not really interested in gemstones or grand complications!

Reference Guide Book
Ben, an excellent book is "Patek Philippe in America - Reference Guide - Volume 1 Men's Watches" by John Reardon (formerly at Patek and now Int'l Head of Christie's Watch Dep't). It pretty much covers all references (not just the less complicated). I highly recommend it.

Hey Ben....
.....we are in a similar position. I also am thinking hard about buying a vintage Elipse this year...and you are correct....there are plenty of variations.
