Vacheron Constantin

What if you could have only one Vacheron Constantin watch from any point inthe company's existence in your collection? What might you choose?

I might give a different answer every time I am asked the question, but today the answer is:




I love the shape, the complication, the size, the aesthetics, and the historical value. Afer that there isn't much left to consider.

Tomorrow I might want a minute repeater (Hint to TM: time to post another pic of one of your VC repeaters).

I was thinking a lot about the Toledo, but the modern one.
This Vintage piece is really interesting, but what do you think of the new version?

is a very nice watch, I don't feel as attracted to it as I do to the watch that it is modeled after. It really is a feeling more than anything rational.

However, finding such a watch would require a lot of patience and a big back account. By comparison, the Toledo 1952 is a compelling value.

Thats a beautiful VC.  Until I noticed  the slide I just marvel at its simplicity and elegance.  Even without the repeater function that would be a great watch!

and at first I was surprised at how big the vintage one is. Then I was surprised at how similar the two were. They were the same basic design, but about 40 years apart in manufacture. The new version had nothing on the vintage model, same tight case, beautiful dial, really impressive on the wrist.

I should add that I live out in the boonies and have never been in an "AD" in my life. If it weren't for the NAWCC regional watch shows, I'd never get to see watches in the metal, other than what I buy. I saw a 5134, Patek dual time, broken right before my eyes! The owner wound it backwards and stripped the click spring.

I would probably need two watches even though the post says if you could have only one.  I'd want one elegant dress watch with an interesting shape so I would go for something with a "cushion" shaped case, and of course make it rose gold!  But for something a bit more robust I would choose a 222 in all steel, its my favorite VC sport watch.

VC's CEO has mentioned that he would like the 222 to come back in some significant way, most likely as the next step in the evolution of the Overseas.

I doubt we'll see anything along those lines at this year's SIHH, but that day will come.

part of the Historique collection.  Still maybe someday it could be the 1st sport watch in the Historique collection.  For now I'd just be happy to see them add some interesting case shapes from the past as new offerings at SIHH.

It is a really beautiful and eye catching piece, and why not, the original has not lost any of its charms throughout all these years!!

However, it has been a love-hate relationship for me since I am very much bothered by the lack of a quick-set button for the day of the week.  This week, my watch stopped on a Tuesday so when I wanted to wear it on Monday, I was faced with having to advance the day-of-the-week display a weeks worth via the crown!  Unfortunately, it was before 6 am and I had neither the time nor the energy so I just ended up wearing something else till Wednesday when I only had to advance it for a day.

Very pretty but also a bit demanding....Hmm...sounds like a few ladies I know

A point in favor of the vintage for me is that it is based on the 453 caliber, which is my all time favorite movement (and also source of the wonderful 1007/1008 movements found in the Chronometer Royal models).
