Independents

I think you are on the right track

our independents' panel discussion at IGOTT2 seemed to agree that they build watches to please themselves, not a customer-driven market research report.
A few of them will even contemplate (not necessarily agree) or consider customer input.
Max said he builds watches for himself, to fulfill his fantasies.

I think an independent is one who is unemployable (either considered so by himself or by his employer) but certainly a more-than-competent visionary watchmaker who can't put up with his ideas being ignored OR with constantly being told what to do (by a boss or a customer)

How many people who buy their watches fit this profile too? Consultants, entrepreneurs, etc (lawyers)
Raise your hands, gents.

...most consultants I've dealt with were unemployable! nt [nt]

and thanks to all for their replies - quite interesting and fun.

Independants - is there a need of in-house production or is it possible to out-source (nearly) everything? Are they allowed to use "mainstream" movements - in general? How many "mainstream" parts can be used before it is mainstream? Who has to be the (main)  owner of the brand? The watchmaker, the designer, the project manager, the investor ...?

All valid points Oliver...

but no answers I'm afraid..!!  It does seem that some makes have crossed the boundry from independant to mainstream but there is no agreement as to when it occured..there just seems to be a general agreement that they are now.

Everybody's views are very interesting and none of them are incorrect.

Cheers Oliver,

Andy.

"no answers I'm afraid..!!" A difficult or lets say ...

philosophical question isn´t easy to answer, is it?

What I had in mind were interesting projects like Ochs und Junior ... Marc Brogsitter ... . Are they true independants from your point of view?

To me it is not that important, as long as I fall in love with a watch and the concept behind. As long as it is a pleasure to deal with the man behind.
Well, with increasing price tag I expect maybe more, more "independence", more ... - but maybe clear unique selling points can do that job as well ... as long as they please me smile

What is with someone from outside the watch business, creating his own brand/project/watch? E.g.  a consultant/lawyer/entrepeneur using old/used (interesting) movements,
recased in new cases. Case, dial, hands ... all new designed and ordered from a specialised supplier. Will he be a true independant? ...?

Still more questiones than answers ...

Andy, to me are the thoughts around that topic more important as the final answer smile

Oliver
