Just read an article about how influential
John Mayer is in the watch collecting world and how he can drive the
price of new and vintage watches up. When he wears a piece in concert
or a photo shoot dealers will start to hoard that particular piece in
anticipation of rising prices.
Honestly that would put me off but
then that would make me as much of a brand slave as the idiots who follow. So I try not to give a flying monkey about what these ambassadors/influencers do.

I wouldn’t want to be in any club that would have me as a member. Or more appropriately I wouldn’t want to be in a club that had any other members.
I have the same problem with art dealers telling me what is important.
Also Mayer once famously write IWC to admonish them publicly for changing the big pilot? Something self aggrandizing like that.

I wish he would not participate in those video interviews where he unnecessarily hypes any given product. He should learn a thing or two from Eric Clapton re: watch collecting.
It's pretty narcissistic of him at this point to be public about it and it's also embarrassing that people are so insecure as to want to emulate him. [nt]

After his latest video with Hodinkee...
My AD told me he got five calls for a green dial Daytona the next day. That watch immediately went from "I can order one" to "unobtainium." Just one example of what happens these days when a celebrity wears a certain watch or hypes it in an interview.

Yep, he’s singlehandedly pushed the YG/Green dial Daytona into hype territory. BUT...
...all he said was it was a cool watch and that it was unusual in terms of dial and metal combo. And he’s right, it IS a cool watch in my opinion. And I’m certain there are plenty here that would likely express the same opinion.
I’m not sure I agree with the criticism; he seems like a passionate collector and he wants to share that. Good for him. He just happens to do so on a different medium.
This is also the same John Mayer that got royally shafted by a certain vintage Rolex dealer several years ago. I bet he learned some lessons from that. (It was public knowledge, there was a lawsuit which may have been dropped or settled or both).

If I recall he also said that watch will become collectable in the future. Regardless of what he said, people heard him and went on to a buying spree the next day. Lately, watch collecting is more about future valuations than enjoying what you buy and wear. It just makes it harder for the mere mortals to be able to afford a nice piece. I don't remember ever listening to anyone before buying any of my pieces since I started collecting watches.
The problem is not John Mayer, but those who hoard pieces he is wearing. [nt]

The problem is everyone but...
It starts with those who believe they should own a certain piece because someone else says so or has one.
There is without doubt a lot of buying like this; but it’s not just watches and this type of influencing was always there so it’s nothing new.
What has turbocharged it is social media, the internet etc.
Very true...
But for many of us this phenomenon in the high end watch industry affects us more personally than any other product. At least in my case and YMMV.
