Getting the entry level models is my strategy for the top indie brands actually, as the high end models are too expensive for me.
With this strategy I have bought FP Journe Chronometre Souverain, De Bethune DB-27, Gronefeld Principia (still waiting for delivery). So I am quite pleased with this strategy.
For other brands like Patek and Lange, I have acquired 1-2 mid level models.
I guess at this stage, I am still enjoying the opportunity to experience more brands and more kinds of complications.

I simply go for what I like. Sometimes I'll see if I can afford the watch in steel rather than gold. I like gold as much as anyone else, but I don't need my watches to be encased in it. Although I can't always afford those special Vacheron Constantin and Patek Philippe timepieces all the time.
Either option is fine provided you don’t “settle.” Have a theme or goal in your collection, or simply buy what you like at the moment regardless of brands, but every time you purchase a specific watch, be fully convinced of it😉
Great advice — I am struggling with my next purchase — pre-owned PP (Gondolo) or pre-owned VC (Historiques)!

Thanks, I'm probably biased in favor of the Gondolo, but either way you'll end up with an iconic model from one of the most historically relevant watchmakers....you simply can't be wrong here! :-)
If you would post the two candidates on either forum, you might receive some helpful comments from our members on the two specific references, which sometimes helps with a decision...In any case, sincere good luck with this (excellent) choice!

The two watches in question are a VC Historiques (33 mm) Reference 92239 in yellow gold with box but no papers. Or, the PP Gondolo Reference 5009j in yellow gold with applied Arabic numbers and with papers (plus hang tag) but no box. The price of the PP is about 2x that of the VC. I am looking for a classic dress watch in gold — the shape of the Gondolo case is unique and appealing for that reason (and others).

I have always bought watches I find attractive and want to wear.
Two of them would be characterised as entry level but neither the price point nor the description made a difference in my decision. My one watch collection would be an MB&F Legacy Machine Perpetual.
I would lie to you and accept the entry level watches, then buy the other watches I also like, and it will never stop.
Just the thought of the concept makes me nervous. I would hate to have to make that decision. However if I had to pick just three I probably can do that
One Watch Is Fine ONLY If....
...if your life's travels have absolutely ZERO diversity. Yet for some humans, we live a diverse lifestyle that includes playing sports, attending formal events... to casual days at the beach. Imho there's no single timepiece that can do it all, especially when one considers an active lifestyle and timepiece reliability... to multi-billion in currency boardroom meetings.
I think One watch will be too boring & will not fit-in every situation...
we need a variety for sure...now finding a right number is one's own journey ;-)

One. I would prefer one watch that sees all my life's experiences than to have to spread life more thinly across many watches.
I have a self-imposed upper limit that I won't exceed for any single watch.
I could go past that level if I wanted to, but it wouldn't sit easily with me. Fortunately that number is high enough to make an enormous range of watches available, so I like to explore and sample. At the same time there are undervalued watches because they are away from the limelight, or because they are associated with a brand that has fallen out of favour. Rich pickings there too.
There is sometimes a the marked step up in quality and sophistication beyond certain price points, so I'm not averse to dabbling at my upper range. So it's basically a mix and match approach. Posh people call it eclecticism.
