Hello everyone, I am considering acquiring either a PP 5170 or ALS 1815 Chrono. Irrespective of the metal/dial combo, which would you get and why?

Come for the macros, stay for
The fact I was warned by a watchmaker to avoid PP because their in-house movements tend to have more service issues.
At the time my choice was 5170 or Datograph and I chose the Datograph.
The market and prices have moved since then, so while the choice is different today I think still the Lange.
Tough call...
...but if you do go with the 5170, I think the leaf hands are the ones to get...
Tried on several 1815 but own two 5170s and a 5172, so that‘s my choice
The 1815 has a great movement and finishing, but dial side up, it‘s just not my cup of tea.
The 1815 is a superb watch, you can’t go wrong with either.
Personally my choice was and is the 5170
The reasoning for me was the following.
It’s a historic achievement for Patek, the first fully in-house manual chrono.
Also I find Langes in general to be a bit top heavy when worn, something I am not comfortable with.
The 5170 is a manual watch that you cannot overwind, pretty cool in my opinion.
The variation of dials within the 5170 range means each has its own distinct character. Something for everyone.
I’d Ike to add that I haven’t had any issues with my watch.
Again, you won’t be wrong choosing either. They’re both fantastic watches.
1815 for me
I’ve strongly considered getting one for some time now. I just find the watch really attractive in person and as others have said, the movement is quite beautiful.
Depends in which metal.
If it is 5170P, then certainly the Patek 5170. If comparing any other metal than platinum, i would go with the 1815 chrono.
They emit totally different emotions, but the subtle baguettes, gradient dial, and shine of the platinum wins it out for me with respect to 5170!

I had the same question at one point
In the end I thought the subdials on the 5170 were slightly better placed than the 1815. I also found that the lange was slightly top heavy compared to the svelte patek.
I considered the 5170 vs the 1815 chrono for years and ultimately went with the 1815.
I was able to handle both watches extensively. I love and prefer the 5170 dial and case (that black dial with wg Breguet numerals had me at “hello”). But the tactile feel, superior function and build quality of the Lange ultimately won me over. Plus it’s attractive in its own way.
I have both, one black, one white.
They are the pinnacle of my collection. I wear them evenly without much preference.

The movement of the ALS is known for its beauty, however, the PP has a “clutch” ( I do not know the correct horological word ) that allows you to just keep turning the crown when winding and the ALS has a stopping point. As a result I enjoy winding the PP more. The PP also feels “better” when winding.
That may sound crazy, but half of the fun of these watches is the interaction, winding and timing, that you have with the watch.

Both fantastic watches
I debated these two watches a few years ago. They are both wonderful and I would have loved to own them both, for different reasons. After several trips to the boutiques, I still couldn’t decide so … I bought the VC cornes de vache (platinum). Still can’t decide between the 5170 and 1815 chrono. Yes, I’m indecisive and am no help here. Sorry!
