Louis Vuitton Tambour Collection
As a certified watch snob, I have to admit I was slightly intrigued when I saw this latest release from a "fashion brand” and jumped at the opportunity to attend the event at the local boutique:
I have never bought anything from Louis Vuitton. But they quickly learn that I was passionate about watches!
Tambour is French for drum. I’m not sure if this works with this latest collection:
Looking at the engine room, we have the ZlFT023 with a 22K gold micro-rotor.
The bracelet integrates well into the case and does result in an elegant profile on the wrist:
This gives you an idea of the slim employee. I’m sure not sure if the LOUIS VUITTON around the bezel is really necessary:

A serious question I ask myself is would I have a different reaction if there was a different brand on the dial. It’s difficult when you are biased. But I do try to myself of what we have seen with Bvlgari Octo Finissimo.
I do have to give Jean Arnault credit for taking the initial steps to more LV in a new direction. Perhaps in a decade or so they will be taken more seriously in the world of horology. But this is a great initial step IMHO!

Nothing wrong with LV..
If you have an open mind.
Their accessible watches often use stock movements as a base caliber and are then customized.
Then they have the more costly, limited pieces that often have in house movements.
I own and have handled many models and they are never lacking quality of fit and finish or precision in timekeeping.
They have many complications and styles that are very unique and instantly recognizable, such as the spin time (similar to Ludovic Ballouard Upside Down at a much more accessible price), the Escale Worldtime minute repeater with its hand painted dial, the Tambour Twin Chronograph… too many interesting watches to list.

One of the points I brought up with them is overcoming this hurdle of being the ‘new kid on the block.’ Yes, they have really upped their game. But at approximately $18K, do I go with them or do I go with a brand who has a proven history of horology. This is very personal and subjective decision every collector will have to make.

It's too derivative to me...
It's so obvious this was made to enter the super hot integrated sports watch market. Yes, the Tambour has been an LV design for over a decade. But the design of this watch to me isn't fantastic.
TRUE, the watch does have some cool details. The movement is well finished. The movement has some cool details, straight lines and perfectly circular lines, clear jewels (instead of red jewels), and a bunch of other small details. BUT, that's not enough to convince me that this watch should be on my wrist as personally I don't find the design to be a great design.
And this is coming from an individual who has bought multiple Bulgari Octo Finissimo products - so I am a person who is willing to consider brands that aren't watch brands.
I'm not going to fault them for trying.
But to their credit, I've seen several posts from serious collectors on various forums initiating conversations on LV and this latest collection. If they continue this pursuit, perhaps many of us will have a change of heart in five to ten years!

It's a hot topic.
Serious collectors or otherwise, it's a hot topic. There will be some serious collectors who will buy this watch. But even just among the "LV faithful" (there are people in this world who like the LV brand and wear LV pajamas to breakfast in the hotels I stay in - personally I think this looks terrible - pajamas at breakfast no matter what brand is not a good look in my eyes) this watch will sell reasonably well. Production wasn't designed to be very high. And sales expectations are set very low - so the project cannot fail since the expectations are so low. You can fool the stupid people all the time, you can fool the smart people some of the time, but you can't fool all the people all the time unless you have a truly great product.

I used to have the LV Orientation and I liked the way LV used to make watches with their totally own watch design, drum etc. Now it looks like they got too conform, looking like all the others.
That’s definitely unique! We appear to be in this trend with integrated bracelet and micro-rotor movements!
In the metal, they do have their own unique look. But I still have a difficult time with the asking MSRP and what I could potentially apply that towards, such as a brand with a more historical horology background!
