Are there any notable or up and coming female watchmakers?
Why aren’t there any black watchmakers?
I’m sure we could all easily venture explanations for this. But actually doing a little search on Daniela, I found articles/interviews in which she points out the obvious about the conservative industry. I don’t want to start any sensitive discussion (or debate) here about the culture and industry, especially as I’d prefer to simply defer to statements by Daniela in the above session as well as other online recordings.
The significance of the fact that Daniela is a black woman in this industry is not lost on me. Kudos to her for choosing this path and proving herself despite her father’s initial wishes. At the same time, I give her a lot of respect for taking this on despite who her father is and how people may be inclined to credit her work…but she is putting in the work and not relying on daddy. Still, I love how her being in that position to learn so closely from her famous dad and have his name has to some extent allowed her to break through walls and barriers that otherwise would have been impossible as a black woman, no matter how awesome she is. Her first Simplicity piece is beautiful, and I expect she will go on to make many more excellent pieces with the goal of starting her own label. She is an independent watchmaker I’d love to invest in early. In the same vein, while I recognize how impossibly challenging it must be for a passionate young black person to choose to go down the watchmaker path given the range of systemic and cultural barriers, I sincerely hope we will see more black watchmakers in the near future.
