Horological Meandering

thank you for this personal review of the new watches Tony

Hi Tony,

Very interesting comments in fact! I mostly agree.

Can I say that each time I see this enamelled orchid by Piaget I want to eat it?  smile

It was showed last year already and it's pretty gorgeous. indeed it may be the hottest watch ever! Clever! Very clever!

Dje:

ps: You're too hard with Dubai!

Thank You [nt] [nt]

But you over looked IWC and Panerai the more important brands ;-) (well bar the Egiziano, which BTW is a remake of an older OP war model) and nothing to do with collectors receding physique, well not as far as I'm aware.

The new Panerai Auto movements P.9000 do look very interesting and the new models to suit (but you don't show them here). The 312 GMT looks like a very cool 'base' gmt.

AP's Jules looks fantastic, front and bank but mainly the back.

Some of this years line are starting to look more and more like Canal st knock off's ;-) (IMHO).
Next time try to get invited to Panerai stand.

;-) Jp

Thanks for the encouragement Jpvfx.

Actually I did take a virtual tour of the Panerai stand, thanks to SJX, Anthony and others, but I was afraid to post my comments in case of assassins.

It's a pity I let slip some wayward comments on the Egi. Now I will have to watch out for The Egi Sanction.

Cheers

ps Are you any relation to Swlabr?

Excellent personal review..

of the SIHH 09 new watches. It is refreshing to read a different take and I certainly agree that the watch of this year SIHH is the RL Pour le Merité. A pity, it is way over my means. Also love your recommendation for next LE AP ROO. Thank you for the post.

LOL!

Thank you sir, thank you.

Thanks a lot Tony for your comments.

I saw this year a quite interesting SIHH, at least better that we could expect before going to Geneva.

You're right, the RL PLM is an amazing watch. Is it not a bit too overpriced ? Only the customers have the answer.

Agreed, FX. The most frequently made and heard comment, and one I agree with, was

 By: ThomasM : February 3rd, 2009-02:43

"much better than expected."

This applied to the new releases, and this applied to the number of attendees, and this applied to the general mood of the show as well.

Cheers,

How refreshing and finally outspoken report.Couldn t stop laughing and reading over and over to my girl your witty comments(I spoiled her movie by the way).I always welcome less sugar coated posts .Its about time we start being a bit more straightforward and harsh about the relation quality/price.Many brands are riding the wave a bit too much and at least amongst us we should be more relaxed and speak our minds more. After all we pay a lot of money for our little "hobby"and I think we are getting a bit too used to 5 figures prices.Compliments again and I hope to "talk" to you soon .Yours,Mo.

It's about 2am here...

... yet instead of finally going to bed in order to recharge batteries for tomorrow's project deadline (yada, yada, pour les connaisseurs), here I am, chuckling to say the least while reading your fresh-fresh comments.

While there might be the one or the other point where I would fine-tune in another direction, overall I strongly agree with your somehow acid comments on the blings and the would-be's to be found in the highest stratospheres, as defined by marketing efforts (and also the appreciation shown to quite a few pieces - dreaming here on the currently unattainable Pour le Merite).

One last rather rethorical question: isn't kitsch a rather obvious matter? For if this is true, I cannot find any decent, reasonable explanation for the design of some of the presented watches.

Thanks a lot for less orthodox report on SIHH 2009 smile

it was good.

Many thanks for an excellent and entertaining report.

Worth reading...

...just for this line:

"My prediction for 2010: Romaine Jérôme release their "permanent diver". You buy the watch, and they throw it into the North Atlantic for you"

Fine work, Tony.

My thoughts…

Dear Tony,

A really great review of the SIHH offerings and some wonderful commentary which had me laughing out loud as well as nodding in agreement.

I too was most impressed with the offerings from VC: the Patrimony Traditionnelle Perpetual Calendar Chronograph has the right blend of whimsy with that engraved moon and functionality (but they are up against Patek in price). The 2-register Chronograph was great (but I would probably go a Datograph first). The 38mm Patrimony Traditionnelle is superior to the new JLC MUT but the Americaine 1921 has really caught my imagination. This was a watch that I initially dismissed, but it’s the one my eyes keep coming back to, and thankfully the comments of those who have seen it ‘in the metal’ are all very positive. I am expecting this to be a long term favourite.

Yes that new Jules Audemars APChrono is a brilliant piece of engineering. At 46mm, however, I think it is too large and despite the engineering and design reasons for a small balance wheel in a high beat movement, I think it looks out of proportion. [I’m just being old fashioned here as I like my Chronometers to have beautiful large balances – get with the times, Andrew!]. Design wise I would go for the MC12 over this.

The JLC Grand Reverso 986 as a very successful dress watch but I am under-whelmed by the movement architecture of the 976.

The A. Lange & Sohne Richard Lange PLM is a brilliant stealthy dress watch with a knockout movement. Brilliant.

And finally I agree with you about Cartier. I have never dismissed them as ‘just a jewellery brand’ and they have had some great designs over the years, but this 2009 offering is particularly strong and impressive.

I am also pleased that the Basel Fair is more temporally separated from the SIHH as we have more time to savour and consider.

Thanks again for taking the effort to put this together and kind regards,

Andrew

Great, fresh, different, hilarious but above all with lot of truth in this report
you are obviously not on any pay roll of these companies

the line about hotel divers is just too funny I couldn't stop
laughing .... with your permission I think I'll use it as a punch
line for my fellow hotel divers friends LOL!!!!

A breath of fresh air just entered my room .....
and I don't mean from "where the sun don't shine"
All the best

P.S. I'll forgive you for trashing Egitiano :0)

A clarification with respect to the Egiziano

 By: tony p : February 3rd, 2009-01:49
Yes, it's true, I called it "ridiculous", and I now concede that that was an unfair epithet. Truth be told, the Egi is not at all a ridiculous watch. It's a perfectly legitimate and (I believe) highly faithful recreation of an historic original Panerai watch.

I think most people, even dyed-in-the-wool Paneristi, concede that the Egi is too big for practical wrist time. But that's not the point of the watch, I do understand that.

In fact I even think it would be fine for a proud Egi owner to strap it on for a GTG - indeed, he/she (I do hope it's a she) will be the life of the party if they do.

However I counsel prospective Egi owners who choose to wear this behemoth in public, that the vast majority of folks out there are not steeped in the glories of Italian and Egyptian military history, and you will therefore most likely hear a snigger or two behind your back. In fact if you meet me, I will probably burst out laughing right in your face.

Cheers

ps The haemorrhoids induced by lifting this piece may in future give new meaning to the phrase "Walk Like An Egyptian"...

Very interesting, Tony

Like you, I was wondering if the Brands will present some interesting novelties, this year, due to the fact that the SIHH was 3 months earlier, and due to the Crisis.

In fact, this was a bit surprising, not to say surrealist...

Crisis?

What Crisis?

There were very good things, and much less good, indeed, as usual.

I was very pleased to see VC waking up, with some fantastic offers, such as the Patrimony open worked dial, or the 1921.

The Equation of Time, by GP, was a superb surprise, as well as the Vintage 45 Tourbillon under 3 golden bridges.

AP made some interesting things, too, as the Minute Repeater with jumping hours, or the ChronAP.

Panerai amazed us with the Egiziano, unwearable, but so tempting.

Lange gave birth to a small marvel, with the RL PLM.

And JLC made the show, once again, with a supêrb variation based on enamel, or some very exciting novelties, such as the MGT PC Tourbillon, or the Minute repeater, without forgetting the Navy SEALs Watches.

Crisis, someone said?

Certainly not in the creation, nor the inspiration!

All these watches are IMO true winners!

Best.

Nicolas

crisis...and how it should impact period design.

 By: ThomasM : February 3rd, 2009-12:27

Hi, Nicolas,

I have to wonder - it is fine and easy to make statements like "flight to quality in times of crisis" and "return to sober, even somber, designs for the crisis filled times..." (hell, even I have resorted to these platitudes, in large part because they are true!)

But who will lead us? Who will provide the joy and light in dark times?

I don't need my hobbies and toys to remind me of the tough, serious times, I need them to provide a respite, an escape...who will provide me these?

Cheers, my friend.

TM

Still Giggling ....

Tony

I am rarely without speech but I must confess your witty quips had me convulsing with laughter.....

Dare I say “Genius”

Thank you for giving a sense of FUN to a "sometimes" serious topic.

I thoroughly enjoyed every sarcastic moment ...

PS: I also have a few t-shirts from RL

Thanks Emmykins, glad you enjoyed it.

 By: tony p : February 3rd, 2009-17:31
In fact they say "sarcasm is the lowest form of wit". Perhaps I should have dialled it down a bit...

I did try to give credit where it was due. My main gripes relate to pricing and poor taste - I do think it's important that we consumers are heard on these matters.

You can't really blame the companies for making a quick buck by dipping a few watches from their range in diamond slurry. I imagine they wouldn't bother if they didn't expect the items to sell. Which, in turn, implies that there are people out there who do buy these monstrosities.

So maybe we, the buying public, are our own worst enemies.

Cheers
Tony P

very interesting thoughts and views.

couldn't agree more on many of your views.

Thanks for the post.

Your Ralph Lauren section did not have a photo...

 By: patrickau : February 6th, 2009-01:59

I got one here...

Ralph Lauren

For a watch company, they make a nice polo shirt. 'Nuff said?

Baby Ralph will run crying to mummy and mama will say " Don't cry, when you grow up, you will be haute horogerie. We will go buy up some manufacture, and show them we are serious." smile

I enjoyed reading your post very much. Good insight and predictions (although somewhere I got lost and didn't know for sure whether you were being serious or sarcastic) smile

I like the point you bring up about intrinsic value/brand of Montblanc.

Pat

Thank you, Tony. Excellent reading, a real pleasure. nt
