For young people ...

And staying on the $ range, why not a Tudor black bay?

Very nice, reliable movement and not boring.

Cheers,

Nilo

That's a good one...thank you! [nt]

Hi, Big Daddy

Always glad to see you here!

And because I am tolerant but NEVER impartial - my suggestion would be a Sarpaneva S.U.F "Myrski" or "Flying Finn" - well, something in that range, direction - and somewhere beyond,

but nothing from a Brand.

Presenting an innocent graduating kid with a watch could be like burning a brand on the hide of a cow. Welcome back to the family! You are branded - - - and belong to us again !!!

In short, I don't think that presenting - or  giving a watch - to any family offspring  for marking some special occasion is a good idea.

But as they all say, "That's just my opinion".

Why not ask them about theirs?

EASY...

at 21, it was all about trying to impress the ladies  smile

The usual brands which get recognition
Panerai
Rolex
Breitling
Omega
of course I'm biased but MB dual carbon sport can probably handle most abuse as well.

Give them a few years to develop your taste in watches! smile

Hope all is well, give a big hug to the missus for me

I think this is most in touch with reality ...

If a Rolex, I would opt for a model that is not faked too much: an Explorer is a nice watch and high quality, without shouting "Rolex!" too loudly, the Milgauss would fall into the same category.

Otherwise, something really cool would be a rubberized divers' watch, like Ulysse Nardin's "Black Sea":

It is available with yellow or lightning blue luminous elements as well, so both boys could get the same watch, but with different colours.

Had not thought of that one but good idea!

She is at the beach but I will see her tomorrow!

Straight from Amy's mouth...

Tell him to recommend a Cartier Santos...

I asked why and Amy responded:

"this way after he buys the two watches, he can pick something up for his wife.  She probably worked harder to get the kids through college than the kids worked in college!"

Hmmm

Why is it that all wives think the same smile

I'd suggest a Rolex Submariner/GMT, since they're pretty sturdy, reliable, and relatively timeless. Or a Panerai, but sizing is quite difficult to get exact and might not be for every one. Maybe even an IWC chronograph pilot (Ref 3777).

Stick to classics. I'm sure the parents (and kids!) will want some thing that'll last a life time.
Another cool option would be to let the kids pick the watch they'd like, I wish my parents had done that instead of getting a watch I already had! smile

Hope that helps!

Sporty, versatile, great value, historically significant, timeless aesthetics

I guess they don't care about watches, and that they won't.

 By: amanico : July 26th, 2013-17:09

The most obvious answer is... Rolex.

Don't nother about the diameter. They will work with.

Any of the Professional model will work.

An exotic choice would be a JLC, such as a Navy SEALs Alarm, if they really care about big size.

Panerai, and the 372 would be another possibility. Or any of their 44 case, if they want something  smaller.

Best,

Nicolas

If they care about watches, Rolex. If they don't, Rolex.

This will apparently be the graduate's "one" watch, perhaps for the moment and perhaps indefinitely. That calls for Rolex for reasons of physical and fashion durability. I agree with the advice not to get one that is too "blatant."

The contrary of my statement is true, too. Well put, MKVC. [nt]

... I am pleased with my Rolex Submariner 114060. Absolutely a pleasure to wear. It is versatile, sturdy, well made and it fits your bill perfectly! Another alternative is the Omega Speedmaster. You can never go wrong with these two. All the best for your good friend and his sons! smile

You might want to suggest the Graduate Special

 By: Spellbound : July 27th, 2013-01:38
Now here is a watch that some might find corny, but it is highly appropriate. The Zenith El Primero Espada Graduation.
Stainless Steel, 40mm, Water Resistent to 100m, Self winding mechanical, power reserve 50hrs, 36,000, and should be within the price. Or if they can wait, Zenith will release a beautiful version of this watch, the El Primero Graduate Special, early next year. These watches have a hidden secret. On the reverse side is a removeable 5 gram gold medallion dedicated to the spirit of enterprise. It is more symbolic of the beginning of a new phase in their life, and could in theory be sold to partially finance a new venture. Obviously nobody envisions anyone selling the coin, but it is a neat concept.
If 40mm is too small, I suggest the Zenith Type 20 GMT at 48mm, unique, masculine, and visually stunning, and in the price range.

Rolex or Omega

The Speedmaster is a great choice, but don't think that at 21, you will be winding watches. In all honesty the best pic at 7k is the Explorer II, is a 42mm case.  But if you want a pay a little less,  an Omega Seamaster could be a winner as well.
