Horological Meandering

IMHO, you can't go wrong with an Omega ...

If you do n ot want it too sportive, as the diving watch shown above, the new Master Aquaterra, with its unique antimagnetic capacity, is a very good product:

How is omega for reliability and ruggedness?

That last one with the orange looks great! And so shiny. Will probably scratch up well!

Was looking at a seamaster great white GMT.  May be too pretty to beat.

There is one which has proven beater qualities in extremis...

One suggestion if you chose the youg-timer: Omega Speedmaster 145.022 with the Omega 861 engine (this particular one has a chocolate dial)

If you Chose a contemporary make, I'd recommend Sinn, the Frankfurt manufacturer. Top Price/Quality Ratio. This is my Sinn 857

I'll look some more at the Sinn, and also look into the vintage SM. Thanks!

By the way Marcus, that chocolate dial is awesome!

Tudor...

Great offerings at the moment at realistic prices.  My current favourite is the Black Bay Blue which I have worn for everything including scuba diving... They look very cool too...

Good luck!

Cheers
Andrew

Tudor crossed my mind. No chance yet to see the blue.

I tried on the red, and I loved it except for some gold accents on the indices. Felt like a deal breaker to me.

Beautiful Black Bay Blue, Andrew! [nt]

Tudor is a great choice

Collectible, lower priced, and the new models are very cool. And the house of Rolex...

Another Seiko

Hi

How about a military type Seiko 5. Cheap as chips , reliable and  able  to take the odd knock or two. As others have suggested you can't really go wrong with a Seiko.

Cheers

JML

It's on my amazon wish list. I'm circling it.

Knocking around

 By: Arie - Mr Orange : August 21st, 2014-01:43
Why wear a watch if you know that you are going to knock it around?? And if needed: why not a simple plastic watch like a G shock or similar? As for dancing etc; shouldn't you just wear your 'normal' watch? Why safe-queen them? Isn't the point of having a watch wearing it? You have sports watches and dress watches. Use them!

It largely is aesthetic, plus not having a feel

 By: watchthatman : August 22nd, 2014-05:02
for how much abuse some of these gorgeous watches can take. It's also that I'm crazy, as are many out here, and obsessed with watches.

As far as G Shock, I have a couple, and they're largely illegible. They're what I wear when I exercise. They're also fairly chunky in a G shock sort of way.

I'm out here because I love beautiful, mechanical watches. So my motivation in this post is, I'd like a mechanical watch that I really admire that I don't need to worry about. I'd prefer to wear a watch like that to a g shock if I was out riding around all day. I usually take nice watches off when I cook, but I'd like a watch I could wear when i'm knocking around over a stove, with pans, steam, water etc.

Some I've seen out here that caught my eye would be a pre-owned speedy, or a new Sinn. Or maybe a cheap Seiko.

We shall see.

Thanks for trying to reason with me!

well in that case

I would go for a Omega or Rolex (second hand?). Maybe boring. Or you know what? What about a Sarpaneva K0? That would make a very cool beater would it not?

Personally I have changed my mind about daily beater watches.

At the moment I'm using my most valuable (as in loved & $$$$$) watch as my daily beater. It's my PP 5980-1A. I used to baby it much more but at some point I figured that it would hardly get wrist time that way. And why pay a lot of money for your most wanted (ex-grail) watch if you keep it in the safe all of the time because you worry about scratches and so on. NO MORE I thought. So the Nautilus is living a life now and it shows. And because of that I am wearing it 90% of the time.

It's out there and I'm loving every minute of it (think Kramer - Seinfeld).

Scratches=Character

I like the way you think! That really opens things up.

I need to thjnk about this fine more.

That's a very nice beater you're wearing!

I'd have a hard time leaving it in a safe place too!

Beaters are different for everyone

 By: Mostel : August 26th, 2014-20:21
For myself, I tried wearing genuinely low priced watches as beater. It seemed reasonable. But once you really collect and love fine watches, your beater needs to have some relation to them. Rolex will always have a relation to any fine watch, even one 100 times as expensive. So a Rolex beater always 'delivers' and makes you feel connected to the fine watch world. But I often feel uncomfortable wearing a Rolex as I work in an extremely casual environment where a Rolex catches attention. In this environment, I don't want the attention. So, I love my Grand Seiko. It connects me in a very real way to my love of very fine watches, that cost quite a bit more.  To me, that's a perfect beater, a watch that  exhibits the characteristics of an ultra high end watch, yet is relatively reasonably priced-- or at least one you don't mind really wearing, scratches and all.  A great beater should also be very, very comfortable. We all have a favorite watch that isn't so comfortable, or could be improved in that regard. Your beater should have that natural balance on your wrist and just feel great, so you forget it's there. It should have enough character that it ages well, and seems to go with everything. Little details about it should harken to the watches you most admire. Such as the fine hands and superb dial of the GS. I could go on...  For myself, another watch that has these qualities is the UN Blue Surf.  Or an IWC 3536 Ti.  And if the budget is more restrained... A pre owned Speedmaster is unbeatable for these qualities.

Lastly... I have stopped worrying about ruggedness, etc. every watch mentioned can easily take normal wear, biking, dancing, whatever-- you'd really have to abuse your watch to make it stop working or ruin its timekeeping abilities.

Have fun!

Thanks Mostel! I really enjoyed your discussion. Especially what you said about the feel.

I'm leaning towards the Speedmaster Pro.  It looks great, and it feels effortless on my wrist!

Good posts...

...this is my beater, recently acquired...very happy with it ! The scratches (invisible on dodgy rob-spec pic) already picked up in a few weeks of wearing attest to it's beater-ness !

Beater Update

 By: watchthatman : September 25th, 2014-18:10
So, I settled on a speedie pro, however, something else caught my eye, something on the dressy side, and the speedy pro is on hold for now.  In the meantime, I purchased a seiko 5 automatic, and it's really growing on my.  It's got a black face, fairly simple, and extremely legible, which is way more than half the battle for me.

JML nailed this one on the head!

I find that I put it on for rougher situations, for example, I wore it tonight when I rode 20 miles on my bike, and then I don't bother to take it off.  It has a beautiful lume, for about 2 minutes, but it's beautiful while it lasts.  Very comfortable and light.

It came with an extremely uncomfortable nylon strap - it dug into my skin like I was being punished for something - and I swapped it out for the Natoish thing that's on there now for $8.

Here's a shot.  Sorry for the double post, can't figure out how to undo it.  I wouldn't  typically wear it with a jacket like this, but I'm freezing in this starbucks, and it's all I had in my car.
