Chopard

19 May 2010, a strong audience of 40 pax of PuristS  attended the yearly Chopard PuristSPro event to preview the 2010 L.U.C Novelties which are also specially created to celebrate Chopard's 150th Anniversary, at the Chopard Singapore Flagship store located in Ngee Ann City.

The four pieces with new calibres featured were : L.U.C Louis-Ulysse – The Tribute, L.U.C 150 "All in One", L.U.C 1937 and L.U.C Engine One Tourbillon.

This evening, we also tried to answer if the L.U.C - The Tribute at 49.60mm diameter could be comfortably worn, and an experiment was carried with three volunteers.



6:30pm, some of our guests had arrived ...

Explaining the story behind the L.U.C EHG Pocket Watch movement, a proprietary  movement developed by Chopard for the students at the Geneva Watchmaking School to assist them in creating their 'school piece' ( the final year project),  affirming Chopard's support for training and to the apprentice watchmakers, and paying tribute to the city of Geneva that has welcomed Chopard since 1937.

Thanks Kong for and Chopard for giving us an opportunity to preview these watches.

A particular watch that caught my attention was the LUC tribute. At 49.6mm, this watch is with its imposing presence sits pretty well on most small asian wrists. A beautifully executed design of a wrist watch that also cleverly doubles up as a pocket watch. An important note to me is that the weight of the watch case against the buckle does not balance well on my wrist. The huge white gold case tends to "slip" to the side of my wrist which makes it pretty uncomfortable.

A suggestion though is to have a deployment buckle to help "counter" the weight of the watch case. Hope this is useful...

It is indeed heavy, and also the strap was a bit long for many of us.

The counter-weight idea is logical, hopefully factory would test it. 

Perhaps would need a 'friction-pad' instead of a polished-surface  at the back of the cradle contacting on the skin to provide more grip.

Out of curiosity, what were your impressions of the 1937?

1937 belongs to the understated, with a beautiful slate dial. 
Love the new details on the case, but would prefer it to be smaller like 39mm instead of 42mm though it wears well.
I prefer less space around the movement, even though I could not see it, with their new caseback.

A large amount of watches are indeed waiting for me in Singapore. Even quite a few fountain pens are waiting for me in Singapore.

I am truly hoping to visit Singapore sometime soon. I have never been to Singapore and I am sure that I would benefit greatly from the experience.

When the plans are made to visit, you will be the first to hear about those plans!

Although I must say I'm disappointed not to be able to attend due to health issues (minor one, but still...)

Looks like the attendance was a bit overwhelming, 40+ guests! There are many admirers of LUC!

Loved the pics, esp the wrists shots (I'm esp tickled by the measuring tape). The new watches all looked fantastic!

I'm also keeping an eye out for the 1937, and it does look just right for the guy with 6.3" wrist, abt my size too...

Once again, tks Kong for the superb effort.

 I'm much tempted by the lovely pics and wrist shots...of the 1937. So simple, yet subtly exquisite esp the sunburst pattern....the red second hand raises the pulse rate a little...I like it v much.

in terms of how well they wear on the wrist inspite of the size due to the lug design.  The all-in-one was also very understated for what it is and despite the diamond bezel I felt.  The Engine One was also much nicer in the metal than in pics and the weight or lack thereof was quite astounding.

I caught a glimpse of the WH Lunar One and I fear my crush on the roman numeral-ed Lunar One is ignited again.

Thanks again for an extremely pleasant evening Chopard and Purist and to Chopard again for the lovely gift.

I like those watches, their dial printed with picture, it likes an art piece. beautiful and uiquie.... available only in Singapore and Swiss. Great that Singapore boutique is able to bring in such pieces for us to viewing. it is recommend to visit the boutique to appreciate the beauty.  Now, have to save more to own one..... Anyway, Thanks Chopard and Kong for holding such a enjoyable evening.

... i am sure all of us who were attending the event enjoyed ourselves very much. as Kong said, there was full Chopard enthusiants attending the event. all of us were so lucky to have first hand to try all these new released great timepieces on our wrist.

as like previous years, Chopard LUC does not disappoint us, this year they launched with three excellent watches - All in One, 1937 and Engine One. so happy to be able to try all these three beautiful pieces on my wrist at one evening.

my impression for these three watches are: All in One is beautiful and gorgeous indeed, partly because of its shinny diamonds on the bezel. nevertheless, in fact i am very impressed by its complications. for the size wise, it seems still can go well for my small wrist, but i find it is a bit thick for me however! maybe i am still not used to thick watch for the moment :-(

for the 1937, before attending the event, i have full of expectations for this pocket-wrist-watch because i fist find it is very interesting idea to combine pocket and wrist watch functions in the same piece. however after trying it on my wrist, the actual feel was turned out not too comfortable totally not because of its large size, but may be due to its heavy weight. and also since the watch is cradled by an outer casing, so it did not fit my wrist well and made me have some uncomfortable feel. despite these, i still like the white enamel dial of this watch that is simply so classic and beautiful indeed!

among these three watches, Engine One was the one i did not expect much before attending the event, however, after trying it on and carefully examining the entire watch, this Engine One however gave me the most surprising and rewarding feel after all. the watch is extremely light with very stylish shape - like a car engine, the transparent case is stunning and gave you full of fun feel that you can see the Tourbillon movement running from outside. there is "car racing track" engraved on the movement from the caseback. one more surprising thing to me is that if based on the photos of this watch early released in this Forum, i was wondering how easy and clear to read those hour markers from the watch. however, looking at the watch from various angles and directions, my worry about that was not necessary!

besides these three stunning watches introduced at the event, actually there was some other beautiful watches at the Chopard Boutique that Kong did not capture from his report. the dial of these watches is painted by a special Japanese material. both Steven and I were appreciate the fineness of these Art work at the spot.

Think for the 1937, your inputs may have been 'truncated' ,perhaps you were typing too fast

There was lots of eye candy around, but 3 watches caught my eye that night.

L.U.C Engine One Tourbillon - The pictures don't do this watch justice. Much more impressive in the metal as compared to the pictures. It is BEAUTIFUL... And amazingly LIGHT! The movement seems to float in the case... strap it onto your wrist and it feels like it belongs there. The markings on the crystal spoils it a little though... but I'm just saying it to nitpick.

1937 Tribute watch is huge (and thick)... just compare it to the other IWC pocket watch in one of the pictures. The relatively plain dial only makes the 49.6mm dial seem BIG, as compared to more busy sports watches like the ROO and PLOPROF. Surprisingly it's quite wearable, although I would use it more as a pocket watch. One feedback on the cradle (docking station..or whatever the thing that converts it into a wristwatch is called) is that the design needs to be tweaked. Perhaps, it's just my wrist, but somehow the cradle unlocks easily while the watch is worn. Maybe that's why there is a clasp to keep your investment on your wrist.

The third watch wasn't one of the "new" 2010 novelties, but rather the L.U.C Tech Qualité Fleurier worn by a fellow enthusiast. Beautiful well laid out dial, classic size, amazing finishing, good heft. NICE.
