I think I've posted this sentiment before; although I am mainly into little European cars, I have been to many hotrod/custom shows just to appreciate the craftsmanship, car and thought that goes into them. As you wrote, anyone can buy a car and just drive it, these guys spend hours and hours working out how to hide the wiring/hoses in the engine bay, handbeat and match fenders and work out unique solutions. I'd never drive one, but I know why people love them.
