Lots of eye candy to get your attention! DJ's were pumping out music with dancer to get you into the festive atmosphere:
Usually each year has a popular product put out by various manufacturers, the 4K Ultra high definition is being pushed by many brands. 2 Years ago at the LG display booth, they had a huge screen and passed out 3D glasses to watch their demo movie. This year they made an even more impressive demo, the details, color, and sharpness was absolutely amazing!
The movie had a part where an astronaut is floating in space and he reaches out to you, it was so realistic several people in the audience jumped! Then there was another part where you were traveling in space and the stars seemed to be flying at you. Hopefully 4K content becomes more common to take advantage of this technology. The more people that adapt it, the price will start to fall.
The CES show is huge, it takes up the entire convention center and consist of the North Hall, Central Hall, and South Hall. This year they had over 3200 exhibitors covering more than 2 million square feet! That's a lot of walking! A few snap shots of the layout at CES:
They had television displays for personal and commercial use. Some were huge and were used for sporting events or advertising banners.
Curved screens were making their appearance as well:
These screens need to been seen in person, the clarity is astounding. Hmmmm....I think I am due for a new tv soon!
Besides the 3D and 4K technology, companies like Samsung, LG, and Sony are integrating touch and or gesture controls. Lots of integration with tablets and cellphones too...everything controlled at the touch of your command.

Bumped into this robot that was very cool...
She's controlling the robot all the way from Boston via an iPad. She hear and see everything in realtime! Surprisingly it worked well in doors, so many people were on their cells so I was amazed she got reception.

I'm tempted with one in the summer for some fun but I'm not sure if the quality justifies the cost compared to many other makes now available...?

I've got several mini helicopters and I have seen a fun mini drone for indoors which also does stunts.... then on last week's Gadget Show over here they had a mini drone with built in camera with a screen on the controller for well under £100.
I'll get moved first then look into it again for the summer in the garden he he

I was hoping to see the rumored Samsung Galaxy S5 but it was not ready to be announced at this year's CES. They did have the new Galaxy Tab Pro!

It felt really good ergonomically in the hand, not so sure how well it fits in the pocket...
I love my Samsung Galaxy S4 and I've accessorized it with a tpu case and a plastic screen protector. We stopped by the Zagg booth and they had a new glass screen protector...
I'm also waiting for the Gear 2 to see if it's vastly improved on the first gen which I actually like.

Wasn't sure what these guys were selling at first but it definitely got everyone's attention! They had performers doing acrobatics and stunts at their booth...

'Bots and Drones @ CES 2014
What better place to see real robots than at the CES? iRobot had their wares roaming around their display, the vacuum bots come in handy.

The bots and drones
I want to see the flying drones in combat, like battlebots show a few years ago. That woud be fun. Other than photography, what other things are they planning to do with those quadcopters?

They have all kind of sized drones at CES. Some of the more budget ones have lower quality electronics and motors so like most things, you probably get what you pay for. I guess if you want a serious drone you can get a real r/c heli and mount a camera system. I think it would be fun getting a small one just to fly around the house!

If any new bodies or lenses will be announced it will be in February 13 at the CP+ show in Tokyo next month. Will update an info and post if I hear any news. Canon has a large setup that you can play with there long lenses, lots of cool toys!

Cellular, Tablets, Wearable Tech @ CES 2014
Huawei showed off their new phablet the Ascend Mate with a screen coming in at 6.1" and running AndroidOS 4.3!

This highend glass screen protector is super thin and optically clear. The tech at the Zagg booth did it quickly without any bubbles. It's also very smudge-proof, this is one of the highlights of the CES, it works as advertise and I think everyone should install one!
Wearable devices especially watches are hot. The biggest problem is that many don't do very much. There was a section that had all watch, the sad thing is some were display only and weren't functional.
TomTom the famous gps maker had their smart watch on display, usueful for the outdoors type or adventurer.

This one was neat, the functions were pretty smooth and the apps were working.
The Galaxy Gear 2 is rumored to be announced soon. I actually like the Galaxy Gear first gen, when rooted it has a lot of potential. Once they figure out the power I think more people will adopt the smart watch. Many of the automotive companies are integrating the two worlds together for all in one functionality.

The Zagg screen protector product is called InvisibleSHIELD Glass. The Galaxy S5 will be launched end of March or April so the Galaxy Gear 2 should be out at the same time. Will post details when I get any info.

3D Printing @ CES
Yes, 3D printing is still popular and it showed at the CES 2014. Newer, faster, and more advanced models were shown for the budget conscious home builder to the advanced highend precision market. The coolest use of the technology goes to these guys, they made working instruments modeled on a 3D printer plus they sounded great! Checkout the drum set, guitars, and keyboard!

TYPO: one of the most talked about product at CES
For all you blackberry fans there is a product for you:
The Typo is a add on bluetooth physical keyboard that snaps onto a iPhone. We got to play with it and the ergonomics are real nice. Placement and layout of the keys are fantastic. The rep tossed it on the floor and was stepping on it to demonstrate the durability and ruggedness of the TYPO. It's light and relatively thin in profile.
So what is the deal with TYPO? Well they got sued by Blackberry for infringement on their patented keyboard. TYPO is available for pre order but who knows what will be of the lawsuit. A big name celebrity came on board with TYPO and I guess if he didn't do that Blackberry probably wouldn't have cared.

. . . haven't been to CES in maybe 20 years, but have loads of memories. Eminent Technology, CAT, Berning, Shahinian, Merrill - edge-of-the-art equipment makers back then . . .

I was there for 3 days and didn't have a chance to get to the Venetian this time. Maybe next year Art you can join us! They take up the top 2 floors and convert all the suites into demos rooms. Your ears will be in heaven at the CES!

iRobot looks good...reminds me of the robots back in the 80's ...where u needed to program the commands on your own and the robots could go around the house to fetch water etc.....Never got the chance to test it back then only played with the mini version.
