Last week, White Castle opened their first West Coast location at the Casino Royale Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.  Opening day had long lines and they even had to close early because they ran out of food. 
We were at the Mirage hotel to join the parties for Super Bowl weekend, and on our drive home we decided to drop by and grab a few sliders to eat in the car.  It's been a long time since I've had the little White Castle hamburgers, with my only experience many years ago in college during a long roadtrip across the mid-west.  Anyway, I thought it would be fun to check it out and see if it was as good as I remembered.  Here's a few photos off the Vegas Strip.  We waited about 45 minutes in line before we got to the counter to order our food.

Ok, we were expecting a long drive home so ordered a bunch of stuff to snack on while driving.  Do you think we over-ordered for two people?

It was a mixture of locals and tourists.  Everyone was in a good mood and didn't mind waiting in line.

Hmmm, maybe I've been spoiled by better quality burgers (In-n-out for fast food, The Counter and Umami for higher end burgers), so these little White Castle burgers were just ok, not great.  But it was fun just to check it out and brings back many fond memories of my college roadtrip with friends when we first had these many years ago. 
So are there fellow PuristS that are fans of White Castle?

I remember a lot of bun and a tiny amount of meat.  They were pretty cheap back in the day, look like they cost a lot more now.

But everything tasted great when we were starving college students, right?  LOL!  Next time I see you remind me to tell you about the All-You-Can-Eat McDonald's and the All-You-Can-Eat KFC during our undergrad years. =O

So true about the tiny beef patty.  I recall them being cheaper too. 
I agree with you Jerry, so many other places for a better burger.

I think I rather have In-N-Out on Sahara or Pink's at Planet Hollywood.  Can't believe you waited in line, it made the news about how crazy it got when it first opened in Vegas. Was the line to the bathroom just as long?  LOL!

It was nostalgic and I did it because we had some fun memories from college when we first had those White Castle sliders.

For Vegas, I really miss Bradley Ogdens at Caesars Palace.  They were one of the first to have a gourmet burger (and awesome for dinner).  Too bad it's no longer there.

Very funny!  you're right I thought of Harold and Kumar movie when I picked up my burger.  Of course my road trip was not as exciting

place that smells really good is Shake Shak...their beef patty has little crisp/char...yum...I tried that once in NY and was hooked. Hope they have one in West Coast.

Five guys' also good, like their peanuts....In-N-Out, ok, I think it is popular because their veggies on the burgers taste quite fresh, so it makes good balance.

It's always good to have options. Thanks for sharing.

I've never tried Shake Shak, we don't have them here.  However their is a Vegas location at the New York-New York hotel.  Since ED-209 already reviewed the White Castle, I guess I need to sample the burgers at Shake Shak.  Raymond, any recommendations on which burger and shake to get?  

My son and I both tried the Hamburger single patty with cheese...end up not enough and had to get inline for another pair...we did not try their Shakburger with Shaksauce.

I usually like to try something without any side sauces first, just to get the pure flavor.

Let me know if you like it or not once you try it.

Back in New York, we used to get a dozen and see who could eat the fastest. (pigs were we!)  Really liked them.  Now I grill my own adult-size burgers at home, in fact, thinking about it, I think that's what we'll have tonight.  I remember that across the street (somewhere on Northern Boulevard in Jackson Heights, Queens, NY) there was a KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) and on top of the roof there was an effigy of Colonel Sanders, holding his cane upwards, as if to shoot down a couple of pigeons, LOL!  Oh, the days....! They were...

Cool childhood memories.  First time I tried them during a road trip in college, we also had a eating contest.  Don't remember how many we ate but sure was fun times.

$6 bleu cheese burger with fries or onion rings and $3 beers until 7PM.  Add a side and share a dessert and it's still much less than $43 for two persons... 

It's also in a nice setting in a nice steakhouse in Palo Alto. 

I'm living it up on the cheap!  And admittedly, I indulge on maybe a couple of these hamburgers per year...  Yum!
