. . . as the new version appears larger, even though it's nominally smaller than the XL. The slimmer bezel gets the credit (or approbation, depending on your judgement!) for that effect.
Less critically is the difference in hour markers - the absence of the Arabic 12 signals a return to the original design, which lends a touch of subtlety to the presence of the dial in comparison to the XL. Conversely, the treatment of seconds markers is considerably more intense with the new version, so there's a trade-off that results in an overall balance between the two.
