Hi All
I hope you enjoy the last set of pictures. To give the PAM 390 an even more historic look I decided to do a strap change. I guess this is where each watch has a chance to be personalized. This is one of the great advantages of the easy strap change and as your more changes so can your strap.
You can see the strap make the watch look like it has been owned for a while. Other than the lack of dings you could imagine this watch is already years old and the weathered strap has a story to tell. If you put your ear right up to it you will be amazed as to what might await you.
Please enjoy the photo essay.
The PAM 000 still remains the closest model so I continue to use it to provide contrast. Both have the same basic DNA. The brown dial, aged patina and gold hands give a distinctly vintage look.
The color makes it feel like it has been aged. Not artificially because as you can see it is rather subtle. Even the aged patina blends in nicely to the brown dial. Reminiscent of the highly sought after brown Rolex dial.
As you can see this is a really thick strap. Not to everyone's taste but the watch head has the presence to carry almost any thickness (I would not put a really thin one on). The crackled ammo strap make the watch look like it has lived a lifetime. When you get into the thick strap mode you are in sports mode and the military heritage shines.
Finally some wrist shots seem appropriate to wrap a bow on the presentation of this new release that is yet to explode on the market. As it has been noted the run is large enough for all collectors to get a shot at one you just need to be within striking distance of a Boutique. I have exhausted my photo skills so this should be the last of this series, enjoy.
Good luck hunting.
Bill

get the 390 now..
Regards
John
Especially when the sun is down...
As for the strap, the style is cool, I would prefer thinner... I will try to show you something, soon.
Best, and congratulations for the 390, I didn't get that you bought it!
Nicolas

the first pic is very nice, the combination -aged luminova, brown dial, gold hands =great
the 005 is nice too but man, what a difference.
If the 390 came out at SIHH 2011 or next year 2012 I think it would be the watch of the year !
strange they kept this secret and strange they don't show it to the big public. How many guys do read and post on watchforums ? Probably less than 10% . 90% loves and buys watches too but they don't go on the net to find out news. I know more than 1 guy with 1 or more nice watches that NEVER reads these forums. Why did these guys never get the chance to see and order a 390 ? Once they will see then on somebody's wrist they'll ask for one at the AD, and that AD won't be able to help him. The AD will want to try at the boutique ...but it will be to late, no chance for a less informed Panerai collector
I've read about..fake patina, thick strap that makes the watch...feel...like it has lived a life time. Truth is the patina is...fake...and the watch...hasen't....lived a lifetime. How does your brain process all the....fakeness?
Cheers - Sergio
I'm into...originals. If I can't have one "old" original (naturally aged) I get something new now, that will...become...an original years down the road...
Don't get me wrong, I had a 411 for a while and liked it a lot. But I didn't like it because of the...fake...patina, I liked it for what is...was..
Cheers - Sergio
I would not go so far as to call the patina fake more of an aesthetic choice. As dreamer8 noted it rather difficult to reproduce the patina naturally without the ingredients. But tastefully done with quality products it is a personal choice as to whether or not the presentation is appealing. As for the strap some are really made of old materials and some are distressed newer materials. I think this is another personal choice. Of course you can't beat originals I don't think that is your question.
So I guess what I am saying it is all personal and I had hesitated on the concept of the aged patina and did not pay any attention until this combination on the 390, applied markers and a very simple brown dial, pleased me very much. My strap happens to be made from an old ammo case and it is ridiculously thick as Nico noted but I am having fun with it. I think the whole package of the 390 is very accessible.
I am with you 100% that the original aged watch is the best but this is a close second. Aged original a few and far between and definitely not as accessible but for the mortals that did not have the good fortune to have the foresight 10+ years ago that train has left the station. We can content ourselves with tasteful combinations like the 390 and we can look and see what they look like in 30 years. So far a lot of the new materials are behaving in strange ways, let's hope that this has its own aging process. You need to have some battle scars on a watch to feel aged so unless they start to scratch up the case and speed up the aging process by dropping a few drops of water on the dial and dripping solution to change the hue on the case…. Hey that idea could be appealing and I know some have tried… LOL
Enjoy the watches and the community it creates look how much fun we are have here.
One pic for the road.

coming from a natural inquisitivness I'm stuck with. No judgement, no personal preferences here. The expression: whatever floats your boat, is one that I hold very dear and epitomizes free will and free choice. Thanks for the reply...
Only fitting, one for the road....

the 36 I chased for more than 1 year....
To me, it was well worth the chase...I've got problems with F.A.T.

Now I get it why you don't like 390's fake patina, my friend
Congrats on such valuable pieces.
HAGWE!

I am trying really hard to resist as I have spent too much this year but it appears resistence if futile!
I like the look of the faux patina with a nice ammo or PAV strap.
Here is my 416 on Ammo...now this would look sweet with the 390...OH Cccchhhhaaddd!
It is...THE VIRUS (As Nicolas says)
It's just a matter of funds and patience my friend,
hold on.
