IWC

So...been trying to decide which of these to go for?
I know they are very different but would still like some advice!!!!!

And your sure they are in house movements.
Not eta unitas or valjoux movements.

If you are concerned over the resale value of a watch and the quality of the movement but if this is less important to you then I would say it also depends which fits your wrist better as the IWC is quite a lot larger than the Patek. Also, do ask yourself which watch 'talks to you' - gives you that special feeling. Do not buy the watch that you like, buy the watch that you love!

It you are keeping the watch long term then get what sings to you. I bought this 13 years ago, and still love it.

A perpetual moonphase is a rich fountain of pleasure to own. I've had over 150 watches go through my hands in that time, with all sorts of complications but this one never ceases to amaze me. And the one you propose is better!

Resale value (as mentioned) is a joke on both so it should not enter into the equation at all. Buy the one you like the most.

Aquanaut 5164 sells as a second hand watch around list less 25%. I can't say about IWC.
I would put it in such a way that nowadays high end watches are that expensive that a normal working person can't really ignore the resale value. Investing into watches is naturally a joke.

If you pursue complications, bigger size, prominent display, etc, then IWC is a great choice and is value for money

If you prefer a great movement, high end branding, and understated elegance , then Patek

No choice because there is the basic issue of emotional impact upon you and only you. These are two completely different watches. Not even close in size, complication, feel. Don't worry about the name on the dial. Both will serve you well. They are not going to be worn by anyone but you so pick the one that calls to you when you look at it. Which is the one you first think about at any time of the day? When you first looked at them which made your hands shake ? I could go on but I hope you catch my drift.

... What he is talking about. Besides, the IWC has way more soul. Forget the price, go with your gut.

I'd go IWC.

This model has some serious punch and wrist presence.

The black, white, silver combination, the super cool moonphase...

So masculine... so impactful.

And IWC just does the Pilot thing THE BEST.

I am not a huge fan of entry level to even high-middle Pateks any more...

To me, the Nautilus is very, very over-rated... as are most Pateks in this range... and don't be fooled about long term value just because it's a Patek...

Only a chosen few models of ANY brand hold value....

If you want a Patek, get a perpetual chrono or above...  hey, it costs me nothing to say that, haha.

Anyway, here the choice is easy... but that is a BIIIIIG BIIIIG watch, the IWC.

My intuition says that your heart is to IWC. Although I am neutral to Patek vs IWC as both have different theme. So listen to your heart as you are not investing rather you are going to enjoy the timepiece.

Since you are looking at the Patek aquanaut travel time, my guess is that you will be travelling between time zones with your watch. If that really is the case, the IWC is a pain in the rear because it cannot  "adjust" the time/date/month/ year backwards. You can either pull out the crown and wait for the time/ date/ month  to catch up with the display on your watch or else you will need to send it to a watchmaker. On the other hand, the Patek is a perfect travel companion. Switching your local time back and forth is as easy as it can be.  If you won't be traveling with your watch, a perpetual calender watch is always nice to have. So it really depends on how you will use your watch for.

Frankly Speaking, Resale Value is very important. especially if you are thinking to upgrade to another pieces. i Myself used to owned the IWC Big Pilot Top Gun PPC, i bought it at a great deal, but when i tried to sell it, it's harder than i thought, even to sell at 50% from Retail price. While for Patek i never experienced with Aquanaut, but i've sold my Nautilus easily. So the right answer for you is buy at the cheap price, let's say you can get the IWC Big Pilot Top Gun PPC at 15k or you can get the 5164 at 20k. if both are brand new then i'd go for Patek

for example if you compare the 3786 to the very similar Top gun version, the TG will get a lot less respect in the resale market... but this exact perpetual model not as much. It's a stronger model. And again, while Patek is definitely easier to sell, Patek is just as often equally 'painful.' But for some reason it's almost never discussed as much as other brands. Patek buyers for whatever reason, do not share their resale challenges as much. At any rate, 99.9% of all watches are losers in resale so do what makes you happy--or buy pre-owned at real market value, it helps. Bit off topic, but... it relates to previous post.

In my opinion, the IWC Big Pilot in ceramic doesn't look that great because of the bezel.  There's something about the bezel on this ceramic version that gives it a rounded appearance when you compare it to a stainless steel or titanium Big Pilot.  Take a side-by-side comparison of the the ceramic and steel or titanium version.  You'll see what I'm referring to.  The lines of the bezel connecting to the case is a lot more "clean" and smoother on the non-ceramic versions. 

And so, I'd suggest taking a look at a non-ceramic IWC Big Pilot model instead.
