Anyway, back to the watch. Some of you will remember, we spoke about this I believe when they were made public. This is the Supreme Friends and Family Submariner, modded by Bamford.
#Hypebeast : The “Supreme” Submariner
For those not familiar with the term a “hypebeast” refers to someone devoted to acquiring those on-trend or popular items. Mostly sneakers and clothing, mostly in the streetwear category. There’s a very popular website of the same name which has been around for over a decade, in recent years they have added dedicated watch coverage. Not a surprising development given the attention some watches now receive and the evolution of the watch resale market, “drop culture” etc to something similar to what was seen in the sneaker and streetwear worlds for many many years.
It came across my radar again this week as one of those friends or family has decided to sell his/her watch. What will make many of you happy is the owner definitely worn this watch, it’s got a decent amount of dings and scratches. So a loved Rolex for sure; he or she did better than most of us on that if we’re honest.
No comment on the price except to say this is likely to be the most expensive modern submariner we will see, we should leave it at that as this is not what we are here for. But we can talk about hype, and if there every was a “hyped” watch then I think this one reigns supreme !

But I assume the people for whom these were made have had a great ride on that business and so it surely also recalls great career memories or memories of friends.
Interesting. Not being one who’s familiar with this particular genre, I assume there’s some sort of proof of provenance (receipts?). Otherwise couldn’t anybody make those alterations to a Sub?

I think it’s OK in this instance as the watches were gifts. But I also think modifications to a Rolex is OK generally.

I think it's mildly amusing, in an adolescent kinda way. And I am absolutely not beyond that, to my discredit. What I don't like, though, at all, is what they did to the caseback. That's where the true act of violence shows, in my humble opinion.

In the end, the box logo was the obvious choice. But there may have been a better way to execute it.

There were 20 made, in 2013. They were all gifts as far I recall.
The original plan was to sell them like any other Supreme branded product, but for some reason they decided against that. If they had done that then my guess is the price would have been slightly inflated from Rolex retail but not much given the limited modifications by Bamford.

Definitely a blurred line. Rolex is not my brand but I respect the hell out of it. The INTENTION that goes into making these timepieces is not IMO to be taken for granted. ICONS are icons for a reason. I respect that intention too much to modify (read mock) a Rolex, Rolls Royce, Aston Martin etc. Freedom of speech is (should be) a right BUT it is also a responsibility.
When someone puts heart and soul (intention) into something

I would have used the box logo (i’m sure bamford can do a decent job of making it look legit a la Tiffany dial) instead and maybe put the F*ck em on the case back. As to the hype concept, well, to each his own.

Supreme doing what they do!
Take a perfectly made object and slap supreme on it and jack up price by 10 fold plus. I am legitimately amazed and take my hat off to them. Who would have thought it would succeed like it did. I did some research on this “piece” and can’t believe what they go for. Thanks for posting this! I learned something new today. Cheers. Ben
Supreme don’t really jack up the price like that though.
The resale market is another animal completely, as is evidenced on this particular watch. And depending on the item it’s as you say, 5x, 10x on resale. Note, as you probably read these Subs were never sold. All gifted apparently.
