I just
return from a short vacation in Chicago. Now, it's been several months since
I've walked into a Rolex Boutique. I haven't even veered over to the Rolex
section of any ADs that I have visited during this time. In fact, I had no
intentions of visiting any Rolex Boutiques during this trip to Chicago.
Honestly, I've been too jaded by my experiences over the last few years.
On
Wednesday, I was in Nordstrom after visiting several ADs and boutiques
throughout the day. Using my phone, a well-known AD was about an 8-minute walk
away. I was thinking that this was a multi-brand AD since I was informed
earlier that day that they had moved from the original location, which I
remembered when I lived in the Chicago area over a decade ago. As I approached,
I saw the Rolex display window. But it wasn't until I walked in that I realized
it was a Rolex Boutique.
I almost
immediately did an about-face. But the lady approached and engaged with me. In
fact, I remembered her from the original Rolex Boutique that was across the
street. We chatted for a while. Then, I decided to take a look at the YM40
(rhodium dial) and the Explorer II (black dial) exhibition pieces. She asked if
I had a particular piece in mind. I replied that I hoping to acquire the blue
YM40 one of these days. She said they had one. However, it was already called
for and the intended owner was scheduled to pick her up before closing at
6:00pm.
Then,
surprisingly, she stated, "But if you leave me your number, you can have
it if it doesn't work out." Now thoughts
were racing in the back of my mind, "Yeah right! Like that would ever
actually happen!" I left her my number anyways and thanked her for the
offer. That was at approximately 4:45pm.
I headed
down to Neiman Marcus and took a look at that Chopard Alpine Eagle. I told the
young sales associate what had just transpired. He got a good chuckle out of
it. As we are talking about watches, my phone rings and I see Chicago, IL come
across on the display. I looked at him and said, "No f***ing way!"
Sure enough, it was her. She said it didn't work out and it was mine for the
taking. That was at 5:30pm.
After
politely excusing myself (even he was shocked), I ran back to the boutique. I
guess the gent tried paying for it with a check, which they don't accept. Plus,
he will be out of town for work for a few weeks. After seeing this beauty in
the flesh, I had to pull the trigger!

This was the final shot after sizing and having them ship the YM40 to me. Unfortunately, I really didn't sleep well over the last days😩

Well, it finally arrived this morning:

I'm in absolute total disbelief that this actually transpired!

Despite the gloomy conditions outside, this has brightened up my day for sure:😍😍😍

I loved that Rolex put some effort into the side profile of the case:

Lume shot:
I don't want to get ahead of myself. Perhaps enthusiasts like us can enjoy this great hobby once again? Hopefully, this story will inspire others that have similar feelings. Give it a shot! You never know unless you try!
Best,
Mark
