I too own a red sub 1680 (1975?, serial 3,9XX,XXX) that i bought on Cape Cod at age 17. I was a new scuba diver and loved this watch through the dealer's glass case until i saved up enough to buy it.
I strongly suggest you rotate the bezel aligning the pearl marker to approxiately 7 o'clock position for everyday wear. It will decrease the likelihood of knocking the pearl marker out with accidentally brushing up against a wall, etc. Believe me, I know first hand.
The original pearls are becoming rare and best installed by a Rolex certified watchmaker who knows how to replace one that was knocked out. The bezel and spring washer must be removed and new pearl is installed from the back of the bezel. I believe a drop of adhesive can be used properly to set the pearl from loosening in the future.
While the bezel is off, have them clean under it while you have it off as it will function like new if cleaned.
Again, use a Rolex specialist that has dealt with this. I use Giovanni who owns the (former factory authorized) Rolex Service Center in San Francisco, Now called "The Independent Watch Service Center". Awesome guy who has seen a lot of rolex repairs across his bench.
Enjoy your red sub!
