I can't really be sure that I like a Day-Date with zero lume. So this one strikes the balance for me—colour matched, essentially, has lume, and still a sunburst. Looks very cool in person, I think, and is one of the rarer combinations for this kind of watch.
WG Day-Date blue vs. black dials
I'm thinking of buying my first white-gold Day-Date (228239) and am trying to choose between the black-dial version with stick indices and lumed hands and the (conventional, non-ombre) blue-dial version with roman numerals and non-lumen hands. For those who have seen these both in the metal, which do you prefer and why? My first thought was to go with the blue-dial version, in part because I have other black-dial watches. But I'm a bit concerned about its legibility in certain lights, particularly given the absence of lumed hands. Thanks for your thoughts!
BLUE would be my choice
Like you said, you already have black dialed watches and for me black dials go with sports watches and not precious metal watches. The combination white gold with a blue dial goes exceptionally well, at least that is what my think. Good luck with your decision!
The black dial for me - not a fan of the Roman numerals —they make the dial too busy!
A sliver of lume on the hands is not effective enough...
I'd go with the classier look of the blue dial.
If you can get the blue dial without the Roman numerals…… the Roman numerals does make the dial a bit busy.

So I can feel your pain ! 😂
To me, romans make the dial so so busy, and in general I would always prefer sticks. I also tend to think, on almost any watch, that romans bring a more dated look to watch.
But, in this specific case with that blue dial and white metal case/bracelet I don’t have the same view.
Out of these two, I would choose the blue dial. And I wouldn’t think twice about lume versus no lume, for me this is never a consideration to be honest.
But two great choices. You cannot go wrong.

By my tally, we have 6 votes for blue/romans and 5 for black/sticks. We also have two write-ins: one for the nice gray/stick version and another for a blue/stick combo, which sounds perfect for me, but which I think isn't an option in the current reference. These responses have given me much to think about, and I'll hold off pulling the trigger -- particularly since I'm having second thoughts about giving up the watch I'd have to trade for it.
