The original black dial model (ref 116660) was launched in 2008 if my memory doesn´t fail and I was able to capture one of the very few watches which arrived to my local hunting grounds in February 2009.
I felt the watch was breathtaking: its engineering, its finish, every detail was tops... and of course the size. The watch epitomizes the technical achievements of Rolex as a watch maker I felt.
The 44 mm case didn´t bother me as I was able to wear my 44 and 47 mm Panerais. What bothered me was it thickness and weight and its tendency to rotate in my 17 cms thin wrist.
The watch remained with all its transparent stickers on while I tried to feel comfortable wearing it. I loved the watch but could not wear it without its annoying tendency to rotate no matter how I adjusted its clasp without being too tight.
A few months later my son came home to visit us and saw my big watch on my wrist and he was surprised because I had failed to tell him I had purchased it. I was wearing it that day (with its transparent stickers still on) in another try to find it comfortable on my wrist. Son asked me to try it and said he loved it so much.
After his visit, I took the watch off, put all labels and tags back and then inside in its original box with all papers and booklets. Then I waited till his birthday party a few weeks later and I presented it to my son.
He was surprised and really happy with my present, but truth is that I have seen him wearing it just a very few times since then. (He owns several watches and his favorites are his 14060 Submariner -which he wears more often than any other of his watches- and a white dial Daytona)
Now, the DSSD kept always haunting my soul and when the Cameron version was launched in 2014 the gradient blue black lit the love flame again.
It was in 2018 that I was offered a brand new in the box Cameron 116660 at a price I couldn´t let it pass even if the new version (126610) with a newer movement and a wider bracelet was just announced a few months before.
This new watch is still in my collection and I really admire it and adore its dial. But I confess I wear it very little. I found the exact bracelet size to prevent the rotation on my wrist but still the height of the watch prevents me of enjoying it as I would like. But I still wish to keep it in my collection as part of my Submariners/Sea Dwellers evolution group of watches.
Regarding the Challenger... I would like to add it to my collection but I have other priorities. I would buy it as a piece of collection and to make company with my Big Egiziano Panerai: too big to wear but a big pleasure to own it and view it on my working desk. A collector´s dream.
Cheers! Abel
PS: (I have similar feelings about case height with my "Red" Sea Dweller 43 mm case, though I recognize it is a beautiful and wonderful watch)
